1950 F1 does not take throttle
I am new here. My 1950 Flathead seems to run very well at an idle but at RPM's above say 1/8 throttle and above seems to not spin up very well. It stammers and even back fires and has no power. I have also noticed there is an excess of carbon in the tail pipes as well. Any ideas? I greatly appreciate any help.

To start with, Bad accelerator pump, incorrect float level.

It could be weak fire, points too close or dirty, dirty or loose wire connections from dist to switch. The carb should also be taken apart, cleaned and repaired.

Re: 1950 F1 does not take throttle
I would start with "ponymare's" approach. Then (back under the shade tree) While it is running I would spray some carb cleaner down the throat of the carb and rev the engine a bit. Might clean something out.
I worked in a shop when I was much younger and a man brought a Mercury Cougar in and said it was running rough. He left the car and the mechanic quickly removed the air cleaner, started the car, sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner down the carb while revving the engine. Smoothed right out. He used the rest of the carb spray to clean up the outside of the carb. When the owner returned he was amazed at how well the car now ran, paid the guy $20 and went down the road. Oh the good ol' days! |

Re: 1950 F1 does not take throttle
Other than problems previously mentioned, the carb can have blockage in passages other than the idle circuit or the fuel pump may not be putting out flow or pressure due to blockage or air leak on the suction side. It is possible to have ignition problems with the coil or condenser too but ignition problems generally won't allow for the engine to run well as any rpm.
Sometimes valves will stick enough that they will still idle but will not do well at higher rpms but they generally stick at all rpms when they are too carboned up or rusty. |
