Oil pump p/up to pan clearance
Finally getting the pan on the 59L. The oil pump pickup screen looks like it either touches or just barely clears the bottom of the oil pan. How much clearance should there be between the 2 surfaces. Thank you Fordbarners.

Re: Oil pump p/up to pan clearance
I think 1/4" clearance is good.

Re: Oil pump p/up to pan clearance
Since he is installing the pan, I doubt he forgot to clean it out. With today's oils and the maintenance these cars usually get, I doubt 1/2" of sludge will ever be a problem. I think 1/4" is the usual placement.

On another oil pan issue, I swear I read somewhere in one of Vern Tardel's books where to locate the external bolt on oil pan breather, but I can't find that reference point. Anyone recall that. I believe the one I have is an Offy. |

You are correct placement of the vent is somewhere. I too remember seeing it.

More on oil pans. I checked the 59L pan by putting 4 quarts in it when it was level, and they just filled up the sump.

Here is what the breather looks like. I saw one mounted on flathead oil pan on a stock car racing forum, but couldn't copy the picture.

With respect to you pan, assuming it's not bolted in place yet, I would inspect the gasket between the dipstick adapter and the pan, most times they are no longer any good. We've addressed this issue more recently with a repair kit on all the 8BA's we do now. With the pan on the bench you should also check the dipstick length for correct reading to the amount of required oil in the system (photo below also)? Thanks, Gary in N.Y. P.S. The OEM pan-to-screen clearance seems to be about 1/2" built-in as Ronnie mentioned above, anywhere between 3/8" and the 1/2" number is fine.

Re: Oil pump p/up to pan clearance
That breather should be mounted on the drivers side near the tp ton the pan. On our stock car I extended the pan under the starter about 6" to collect the oil during the corners, with 1/2" clearance . WE also had a form of windage tray welded to the inside of the pan. Can't take credit for this, I copied it from a magazine article.

Re: Oil pump p/up to pan clearance
For those of you thinking about a pan breather . . . because they do look cool now don't they!. I just had to put one on my 34 Ford about 40 years ago - mounted it HIGH as I could on the Driver's side . . . was very happy with how it looked. THEN - I drove the car all around town (was my daily driver).
That nice pan breather did a really nice job of keeping my brake pedals, X-member, transmission, rear and everything behind it REALLY NICELY coated in oil. You will find that putting those types of pan breathers will result in oil mist/spray/leaks no matter what you do with them . . . . you'll soon wish you never put the dang thing on. I still have that oil pan -- needs to be welded up as it will never have a pan breather on it again as long as I own it. LOL B&S |

Re: Oil pump p/up to pan clearance
I usually run mine at about 1/4" clearance - but anything up to about 1/2" is just fine.

Re: Oil pump p/up to pan clearance
Lesson learned about breather in oilpan...crank slings up a lot of oil...on side is less of a mess...and adding a piece of sheetmetal as a deflector over it isnīt a bad idee...
That said i have a very nice pan drilled and ready for anyone tempted...lol |

Hell, the BESTEST way to look "cool" with one (or even two) yet have it (them) NOT leak or blow oil out is to drill and mount vent to the pan, WITHOUT cutting the big hole for the "breathing". ALMOST as bad as puttin' a sock in your pants, though. DD |
