Default A 42 Ford Tractor a friend has?

I have a friend that has a 1941 or 42 Ford Tractor that he rebuilt and is in very good shape that he thinking of selling. I live in town and have no use for it. Boy did I like it. He started it up for me and did it sound nice. He want $3000 he asking for it and he has way more then that in it. I should have taken pictures of it but did not have my camera with me. I did find a lightweight aluminum open car trailer for sale for 2500. I needed that more then the tractor.

The 9N and 2N were pretty much the same except the 2N (1942) was a war time version that had a magneto and no electrics with some having lug type rear wheels. Most were converted to 9N specs after the war. The 8N replaced the design as an updated unit in 1948 but it still had the same basic 120 CID engine. The price is very good for one that is in good condition. The 8N models have a better three point hydraulic control but the 9N can be modified to work like an 8N.

Owned an 8n for about 10 years, mine had a loader, used it to clear the lot behind my house, fun, handy, considered it my old car. Since I sold it two summers ago I have come up with several projects I wish I had it for.

If you feel the need for more power, there are kits available to bolt in a flathead V8.

Yes indeed! I've just been mowing my paddocks with my 8N; love it! I imported it from California about 15 years ago, and it is great! Always starts, even if its been sitting in the barn for a year or so. More useful than a trailer; but then again, I never trailer any of my vehicles! They are made to drive!

I have (and love!) an 8n, but have never messed with a 9n or 2n. I have no idea if the earlier ones are worth more or less than the later ones. Around where I live you could purchase a good running 8n for less than $2000 a few years ago.

I have a 1948 8N with a box scraper on it. A basket ball size rock sticking hallway out of the ground will stop it. I bought it because it was an old Ford. But without a loader on the front its just a glorified rake. They are made for pulling a disc. Every orange grove farmer here had one. They are the most common used tractor around here.

Ford sold a two-bottom plow for them but there is no way my 8N could pull one through this heavy clay/rock soil. They are good for scraping the ground, mowing and moving horse manure but they are useless when it comes to digging.

I bought a used 4x4 L3430 Kubota tractor at an Estate sale. Its a little bigger than an 8N. I have put over a 1000 hours on it in just over a year moving dirt and big rocks. I will never have a tractor again with out a front loader! Its a tractor, its an engine hoist and its a forklift. It even tire bead breaker.

I highly recommend a pair of these Gearmore forks. It took four people to lift this ore car into my truck. I adjusted the forks to the width of the ore car track and just rolled the ore car out of the truck and onto the forks. I've had two back surgeries and three shoulder surgeries. These forks are my new best friends.

I had a 9N for several years. It was a nice little machine, but lacked power. I sold mine for $1,000 to a man that needed the snow bucket on it. If you need a tractor for any kind of serious work, I would consider a new light tractor. My 9N needed constant repair such as replacement of the pin in the transmission that operates the rear lift arms.

I have a later Ford 850 from 1956. I like the 5-speed and the larger overhead valve engine. It has more power than the old 8N series & NAA. My Pop had a Fordson Major when I was a kid and I loved that thing but they are fewer and farther between. He traded it for a Ford 5000 in 1965 and never looked back. That 5000 had some power. We used the big John Deere tractors for plowing but the 5000 was perfect for planting.

Lots of Oliver's as well with grove fenders.

I have a few old Ford Tractors, as well. My oldest and favorite is an NAA 1954 which my grandad bought new. It still runs but needs an overhaul, as it burns quite a bit of oil. Never been rebuilt totally, but I personally re-ringed it and replaced a burnt valve in 1972. It probably has about 3000 hours on it. My dad left me a 1957 model 801 which is a nice size to bush hog with. I also have a 76 Model 5000 Diesel with a front loader. Like Rotorwrench said, it is a powerhouse. Not nearly as maneuverable, tho. That bushhog loader is heavy making it hard to steer, even with power steering.

I have an 8n that I bought in 1982 and have used it ever since on my farm. The hydraulics are pretty bad and I use it now for mowing my yard which is about 3 acres. It always runs and is very dependable. I found a 1953 Jubilee in 2014 that was a golf course tractor with low hours, turf tires and straight sheet metal and I use it for all the farm work as well as it has a 7' blade that mounts on the front and with tire chains and a drum of weight on the rear, it is like a bulldozer.

I have a 2N with an 8BA in it. It's a toy. If you want one to work it, honestly I would get an NAA or newer. The hydraulics are much improved over the 9N/2N/8N. The 8N does at least have 4 forward gears.

Around here any of the 9N/2N/8N can be bought for under $2000 running and with usually a bush hog. Restored ones (not just an "aerosol overhaul") can bring more but the market is very limited. These are easy to work on and parts are plentiful and not too expensive.

ALANWOODIEMAN you should PM me, I can give you a lot of tips and pitfalls to the conversion.

If you buy an early Ford tractor to use with a rotary mower, be sure that you have the correct coupling between the PTO and the mower. Otherwise, the mower will push the tractor forward regardless of the clutch position.
