greasing the clutch shaft/throw out bearing.
Figured since I just got this car (29 Tudor) that I should grease and oil everything. It kinda looks like most everything has been greased lately, but I am going over it all again, so I KNOW it has been done. I figured that the clutch splines hadn't been done for probably a long time, but I don't know how many pumps from a grease gun I should give it.

Don't grease the splines, it will cause the clutch to slip or grab, also the T.O. brg. doesn't need any.

There is a zerk there and the "book" says to grease it every 2000 miles.

I have alway's rubbed grease on the splines in other cars, but I always wipe 80% of it back off. I started doing this back in the 70's because a few trany splines I've had before looked pretty dry and galled. Regards Bill |

Re: greasing the clutch shaft/throw out bearing.
The original T/O bearings had a pathway for the grease to get to the interior of the bearing but not the shaft splines for good reason. Most or all newer bearings are sealed with no pathway to the bearing. You'd only be greasing the sliding carrier for the T/O bearing and it probably is not a big issue. Too much grease there would/ could become an issue.

Don't forget that many books and lube charts were written a long time ago. Lubes are much better today than in 1930, so the 're-lube' or 'change' interval can be significantly extended past the numbers you read.

Re: greasing the clutch shaft/throw out bearing.
Being rather on the thrifty side, I have never bought a new T.O. bearing. When I have the engine or trans out I remove the bearing from the collar it's mounted on, clean the outside thoroughly, force grease into the bearing by using a wheel brg. packer, and re-install. Good as new!

Re: greasing the clutch shaft/throw out bearing.
While you are at it, use the correct grease for the water pump and do not put too much into it because you will load up your radiator. I personally do not lubricate the rear bushing while the pump is on the car but I do remove the water pump, grease it and remove any excess and reinstall the pump. Ed
