What to carry in car for on the fly repairs
I know I have seen a couple of threads about what people take with them in their car for emergency repairs but I have searched and searched and can't find it. Would anyone know of the thread URL. Also is there a way to search for two words? I have not found a way to do it. When I try to search for "Tool Box" I get all the posts that have either the word tool or box in them but not necessarily both. Thanks. Jim

This is the info at the MAFCA website
Be Prepared for Touring The following list of tools, parts and supplies is a good checklist when preparing your car for a tour. Why don't you post it in a convenient place in your garage? Once you're prepared for a tour, you'll feel more comfortable knowing that if a problem occurs, you'll have the tools and the spare parts to repair the problem. http://mafca.com/tqa_m_be_prepared.html

Re: What to carry in car for on the fly repairs
A fan belt, coil, points, and condenser and a couple of 36" clip leads are small and easy to fit under the seat. These may not be easily found in small towns, and should get you home, if they go out. These are the only parts that one might need to get home. The carb, generator, starter, water pump, etc. should already be rebuilt and good to go for several thousands of miles. Throw in a test light or volt meter.

Re: What to carry in car for on the fly repairs
When we started traveling alone for a two/three week vacation, I would carry a spare of everything (no room for spare engine).
I never needed them, so I now travel a bit lighter and there's now room for clothes.

In most search engines, if you put the two words in quotation marks, it will treat it as only those two words together: "tool box"

Re: What to carry in car for on the fly repairs
Cash.... And an uber app... Nothing. Else...well, maybe a few beer waiting for the uber..don't carry ignition components for my daily driver. Why for the a...??? Did get a flat last week in the a. No jack... Teen at the farm house i was in front of. Was happy to bring me out a floor jack....he was interested. Gave em $10 for the jack, and he wanted to do all the work..... I watched him he did fine. Back on the road in 10 minutes no aaa necessary. Didn't even get greasy. Ignition isn't going out instantly if it's checked and tested. And float level, fuel line length and pencil filter crud, .... Should all be checked before the ride. Once on it there not changing. And an uber will get ya to a napa for a condenser if needed...

As has been written most problems are electrical... And like Tom said, I made some spare wire leeds and a AAA card

Re: What to carry in car for on the fly repairs
Never understood the need for spare points, how many have gone so bad so quick that you should not have figure out they needed replacement many miles before they fail?
Build the car right and not much will fail. Get the burn out proof condensor and a spare to help the guy that did not buy one. As for tools carry all the original tools, except a ratchet type jack. Get a screw type for safety. Bits of wire, clip leads, and bailing wire will help in a pinch. If you took your time to properly rebuild everything you can trust the car to just work. Often the car gives you a lot of warning it is unhappy, you just have to listen. The person with a properly rebuilt car usually carries a bunch of extra parts to help the others get their cars going on tour. |
