Anyone had a Maaco paint job done on their Ford?
Which level did you go with?
What was the price? How'd the paint job come out? |

Re: Anyone had a Maaco paint job done on their Ford?
I manage a fleet of just over 300 cop cars. Usually we just go for the bare bones, no body work, scuff and spray single stage $300 job, and at 50' they look ok, but they will have some runs, sags, orange peel and will fade out in about 18 months. I recently acquired a very nice '08 CV but the original white paint was coming off in sheets. The intent for this car was to put it back to work as a civil service car, non patrol, but it's not practical to spend $4000 to $6000 that the average body shops charge. I opted to go for a $1350 two stage, no body work (very straight car) in white. We removed the grille, lights, mirrors, etc. ourselves ahead of time, knowing not a lot of time is spent on masking. The results were unbelievable. No runs, sags or orange peel. Now as far as how long it looks like this, only time will tell. It does have a 5 year prorated warranty, but usually in our case somebody will crash them before the 5 years I don't know where Maaco gets their paint, probably by the 55 gallon drum or even larger, but so far I'm pleased for the price

If you go with their top tier paint, do most of the prep work (remove trim, wash, scuff) they come out "OK - to - NICE". I had my car for eight years after and the paint was still good. I did sand and buff out a couple of runs, kept it clean and waxed, it did set outside over those years.

If u prep the car they generally do a pretty good job. If u need to do some biddy work and prime be prepared for no warranty. Well worth the price if u are not looking for show car quality

depending on the color and what your looking for there budget paint job is probably enamel leave it in the sun 3-4 yrs and no shine midline job maybe urethane single stage good hard finish top of the line maybe base clear by far the nicest best shine as stated its all in the prep I did bodywork for 30 plus yrs when it came time to do my sons 94 crown vic interceptor we did the bodywork and prep I sent it to a shop $500.00 single stage DuPont urethane car looks great nice shine and people still moveover when you come up behind them although none of our county cars look this good I couldn't buy the materials for that price but as stated masking leaves a lot ao room for improvement but that's production work

If you have a beater old car and just want it to look good going down the road, its fine. But up close there is so much lacking. Runs, light spots, poor taping off, no shine.

My thoughts were to go with their medium priced, urethane single stage paint, in the factory color of Wimbledon White, do the water sanding, remove/tape up as much chrome as I can.

Walk around and look at the cars waiting to be delivered.

prep work is the key but a good painter is just as important after the prep

Find out who the painter is.....go talk to him and promise him $50.00 for a nice shoot, he'll make sure it looks good.

Like any shop, much depends on management's attitude toward quality and the skills of the people they hire. The right Maaco shop will give amazing results, just as the wrong custom, high-dollar shop will produce garbage (if they ever get it done, that is).

Re: Anyone had a Maaco paint job done on their Ford?
I was told that Maaco has their own generic color choices and will not be able to duplicate the factory Wimbledon White on my '65. Anyone else heard this?

Re: Anyone had a Maaco paint job done on their Ford?
MAACO guy I talked to said they will paint any factory color at no extra cost. I doubt that includes premium paints such as pearl. He also said the price difference for the up grades was the cost of warranty; that all levels of pricing use the same paint regardless.
Had a Fox body Mustang done in Black; went with the cheap option. I did all of the prep work including spot Primer. As long as I used the correct primer, they primed, sealed, painted and guaranteed the job. Very happy with the results. They even offered to give me a qt of the paint for touch up. I am going to have my next project done at MAACO also. I figure I can cut and buff any errors. I'm sure this would have to be done no matter who does the job. Have friends that also go this route which is how I came about it because they are happy with the results for the price. As stated in a previous post, it all depends on the guy holding the paint gun. |

Good to know! If the creamy, delicate, pastel hue of my Wimbledon White Ford was resprayed into a generic General Motors Frigidaire Ice Box white I'd prolly go postal upon delivery. Agree 100% on "the guy holding the paint gun". I'm pretty decent at water sanding and priming and cutting & polishing; but NOT at laying out the final coats. |

The $50.00 pre tip is the best tip listed here, and will bring the best results........
