Default High Compression head ?

Is there anyway with the head off the engine to tell if it is a high compression head. It does not have any marks on it or who is the manufacturer. Is there any dimensions for the depth of the flat area on the inside of the compression chamber that can be measured ? The head has not been planed.
Thanks,
Jim

Most high compression heads have a heart shaped combustion chamber. A stock head has a combustion chamber that is more square shaped.

I have found that most of the original heads have a small bump or square in the casting just in the middle of the boss where the water pump mounts. Most all of the original cast iron parts have this bump. I have found them on the block, water inlet and outlets, water pump housings, crank pulleys and other original parts. If it has the bump, it is stock.

The bump mentioned above may not be the most reliable method to tell. I have a stack of original heads & boxes of water necks and only a couple have the bump.

Alot of Ford heads produced after the Model A was built should have a Ford script and some will have a part number cast into the head right on the water pump boss.

The combustion chamber is a dead giveaway regardless.

Not yet. I'll have to get that from Brent and post it this weekend.
