Default Removing pedal shaft pin

The brake & clutch shaft on a friends car is badly worn. Can I grind off the head of the pin and drive it into the bell housing? Or do we need to remove the rear and bell housing and tap it out from the inside? Thanks

I don't think it can be driven inside. Use 2 pipe nipples and a coupler, snug it all together, slip it over the shaft, put a punch thru the hole in the end of the shaft, then using 2 pipe wrenches and undo the pipes. It should pull the shaft out of the case. I dont think the pin is tapered, just has a dome head on it. Should note the shaft is pinned in from the inside so the trans has to come out. While its out im guessing the clutch fork shaft has never been replaced either so you might as well do it too

I did it sorta like you described...ground the head off, drove the pin about halfway out and the lassoed it through the clutch inspection port, then drove it the rest of the way out and pulled the string lasso and pin up and out through the clutch inspection plate. Only difficulty was seeing the pin after grinding off the head...you might want to mark the location of the pin on the housing before grinding it flush.

Their is ample room in there to just let it stay in there. I have taken engines out that were running fine, and found 10-15 starter drive bolts, and even once a set of keys on a key ring, all inside the bottom of the clutch housing.

Thanks to all, I think we will just clean up the existing shaft and re-bush the pedals. Mitch I had read the posts in the search but did not like the idea of cutting and driving the shaft in. I do like Seaslugs way of pulling the shaft, that's a great idea. We just put a rebuilt motor into the car and I do not want to pull it out. I wish the owner had mentioned the loose pedals before. Thanks again.
