38 generator wiring
I'm trying to wire my generator on a 38 60 hp standard. Attached are photo's of the cut out and the wires. Do both the wires attach to the front of the cut out?
Can't seem to get phot's uploaded. Any help would be appreciated. Bob Last edited by fordor; 02-22-2018 at 03:27 PM. |

Re: 38 generator wiring
Can you read wiring diagrams? If not just post the question again. Actually the 37 diagram is a easier to read.

Re: 38 generator wiring
So do both wires go on the front screw or does the thicker one go on the front and the smaller wire go on the back screw? I've see those diagrams , but it doesn't show for sure where they go.

Re: 38 generator wiring
Why would two wires go to the same terminal? The Yellow/Black (if you can still see the color) wire from the battery/starter relay/fuse panel goes to the front. The generator wire (from inside the generator) goes to the back.
Here are some Model A photos (all I can locate at the moment): Last edited by JSeery; 05-15-2016 at 07:15 PM. |

Re: 38 generator wiring
There is no regulator mounted to the firewall. The two wires going to the generator are wrapped together till the end (as seen in photo). The other end goes thru the firewall and under the dash. I'll have to check the #'s on the generator, but I believe it is original to the car.

Re: 38 generator wiring
Bob, the larger of the two wires would be the power/battery wire which goes to the front terminal (radiator side) of the cut out. You can test this by connecting a test light between that wires terminal and ground which should light the test light. The other smaller wire is not normally there unless the 60 hp car has a generator or ignition warning light on the dash panel. If that is the case then the thin wire would go onto the rear terminal on the cut out where the generator wire is connected. Is your car a USA built or English/German car ? If your car has a generator warning light then to test it just ground the thin wire (disconnected from the cut out) and then turn the ignition switch on briefly and the generator light should come on. Are you sure this thin wire did not go onto the ignition coil somewhere. See how you go. Regards, Kevin.

Re: 38 generator wiring
Bob, you really need to trace that thin wire under the dash to see where it connects to. It may not be original but an add on. Regards, Kevin.

Re: 38 generator wiring
Thanks for the info. I'll track it and see where it ends up. I have the wire that connects to the coil already attached. I'll let you know what I find.

Re: 38 generator wiring
The extra wire wasn't connected to anything. Got the motor running with no problems.
Thanks everyone, Bob L. |
