Ford Y Block PCV System
y blockers
it looks like the lower crankcase vents out around the lifter gallery in two places. in front, out the front of the oil pan, up the timing cover case and in the front of the block through two bored holes. in the rear, up through the distributor clearance cast in opening in the lifter gallery. whew, get to the PCV setup next time! in pictures, block is upside down. have a nice day!

Re: Ford Y Block PCV System

ok, now the new PCV system i'm going to put on. it's just the later type. left side ( driver's side ) PCV valve and grommet in valve cover. that goes to engine vacuum, carb base or manifold fitting. the right side valve cover gets a fill tube with a cap for hose. that gets plumbed to air cleaner air. that's it! taking apart engine i noticed it would have been a lot cleaner with a good PCV system. have a good one!

Re: Ford Y Block PVC System
I am a little confused by this topic and the posting (s) there-in.
Adding a PVC system to any of the Ford Y blocks, 272,292 & 312 is a very simple operation if a system from a '64 Ford F-100/250 is used.. Using the '64 truck system, the road draft tube is removed from the rear of the block, the truck adapter is attached in it's place using the stock bolt. A length of 3/8" attaches to the block fitting, the Ford PVC is attached to the vacuum port in the manifold via the threaded port and the 3/8" hose from the block is attached to the PVC. You must use a venting type cap on the oil fill tube to allow air flow into the block/crankcase.. If the engine has a draft tube/filter attached to the left front of the block, the unit must be blocked of.. I know the 292 truck engines up through '63 had this type of additional ventilation.. The Bird 312's did not. On my F-100's I installed a flat piece of sheet metal between the canister and the block to retain the stock look. This system is a stock Ford item which can be harvested from any '64 Ford 292 CID engine. Another method is not quite as neat, it requires a vacuum plate under the carb to attach the hose, then a hole is drilled into a valve cover large enough to accommodate a GM type PVC and the rubber grommet for same.. A baffle must be fabricated within the valve cover under the PVC to prevent the PVC from sucking oil from the rocker arm chamber... Looking closely at the attached pix you can see the hose for the PVC laying under the air clearer.. I have the '64 Ford F-series PVC systems on three of my vehicles, my '57 Bird and my two '59 Ford F-100 4x's...

Re: Ford Y Block PCV System

mine is a '64 F100 engine. i went out later and looked again at what it came with. the oil fill cap has the provision for the PCV hose. the PCV valve is a straight kind on a 45 degree fitting on top of intake right in front of carb. ok, that's the 'out' on the engine. there is no place on this engine for clean air to come in to engine. anyhow it's getting the later PCV system. it does a better job getting blowby out of the engine. have a nice day!

Re: Ford Y Block PCV System

the idea here is to put a later better PCV system on the 'ole y block. you want the air coming in and out the highest points in the crankcase and that's the valve covers. in one side and out the other, pretty straight forward. fresh filtered air into right valve cover from the side or bottom of aircleaner and out left valve cover into carb base or intake manifold fitting. i'll be using chrome valve covers to hack up and the old originals go on the shelf in the garage. have a nice day!

i get you now. i went out and took ANOTHER look at valley cover. it has the vent tube at the rear too. this engine is probably getting a finned valley cover so the valve cover PCV is the way to go for this. finally came back to me it's positive crankcase ventilation-PCV! have a nice day!

The engine fumes drawn by through the PCV valve should be directed to the intake manifold plenum by way of a carb spacer with a vacuum inlet. This allows the engine fumes to be distributed to all cylinders and not to just one or a few with a direct intake manifold vacuum source. The fresh air inlet will be the oil filler cap (open with filter). The later valley pans have the allowance to place a valve there. The idea of butchering rocker covers scares me... The road draft system(s) left much to desire.

Re: Ford Y Block PCV System
I once had a upper cylinder lube system fitted to the vacuum port on the back of the manifold on a 351 Cleveland engine. It constantly fouled the back four cylinder plugs. I would think that if you connect a PCV system to the back vacuum port you will lean off the mixture for those back cylinders.
My understanding with a PCV system is that it should be connected directly below the throttle plates. It is for this reason that a 1850 Holley is so widely used. It has a vacuum port which allows for PCV connection. I'm with Kultulz. Regards

Re: Ford Y Block PCV System
The '64 Ford F-series Y-block PCV system I have on my '57 Bird and the '59 4xs has been working very well since 1967.. I have never had problems with fowling plugs or oil blowing out of the fill cap which is very common on the Y blocks.
You can note from the pix I posted earlier showing the 312 in my Bird... there are no holes in my T-Bird valve covers.. the truck system looks like it belongs on the car. A side-bar to the "smog issue" on the Y-blocks; In 1976 California mandated that all cars and light trucks had to be retro fitted with emission control devises.... The major system that California approved was as I recall called NOX... The CHP and DMV was charged with enforcing the application to the vehicles the law effected. I installed the truck PCV system on my '57 Bird and '59 Ford F-100.. Both vehicles passed the emission tests, a blue approved sticker was placed on the right side of the windshield.. My '57 Bird still has the CHP sticker on the windshield..

here are pic's of: 1 rear PCV tap on stock valley cover that i saw the second time around. 2 the baffle under it that Blucar was talking about. that's quite a baffle! 'they don't make 'em like they used to!' 3 stock vacuum port for PCV to draw in blowby w/PCV valve. that's a straight thread in PCV valve. have a nice day!

where's the fresh filtered air coming INTO the crankcase? you have to get the basics right before you want to go fast. stock fresh air in goes in oil filler cap with tap on it. it comes from filtered air in aircleaner ( inside the aircleaner filter ) not stuck on side of aircleaner. have a nice day!

Re: Ford Y Block PCV System

here are the valve covers to 'modify' for an up to date PCV system. $39 from Speedway motors. the left one gets hole sawed for the PCV grommet and a 90 degree PCV valve. the right valve cover gets holesawed and a oil fill tube get brazed on. the PCV valve ought to be forward on the left and the fill tube can be left, middle on at the rear on right side. have a nice day!

Re: Ford Y Block PCV System
I see what has you confused. This diagram is showing a CLOSED PCV SYSTEM as opposed to an OPEN PCV SYSTEM. The dia shows the later system where fresh air is drawn from the air cleaner and this does not allow fumes to enter the atmosphere. The Open TYPE draws fresh air into the crankcase through a breather cap (filtered) either on the oil fill tube or a rocker cover. Now, on this manifold vacuum source you showed, does the fitting tie directly into the intake carb plenum where the fumes can be directed to all cylinders are just one or a few runners?

1 looked at 2bbl that came with 292. there is no PCV tap on carb base facing forward. which became standard later. 2 that's a 2bbl intake manifold in picture and the PCV port is close enough to draw it into all the cylinders. yes, the carb base one is more perfect. 3 the truck system has the filtered air tap on the filler cap. older systems have only the little screen on filler cap . 4. here's the valley cover i mean AND it'll go just fine with updated valve covers and PCV system. have a nice day!

here's a nice 90 degree PCV valve. http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...209_0182362446 ok, that's a great tip from blucar to use a truck type setup to keep the stock look. for the racers the later conversion is the way to go! most racing engines will have a Holley with the tap in the carb base. have a nice day!

Of all the things to do to make an engine ugly (IMO) is to put the system on rocker covers. Even the early SBF and FE/MEL had a hidden system.

OH!... BTW PCV valves are calibrated to needed designed airflow (carb mixture calibration). I would use the MOTORCRAFT valve designed for this application. Anything else may throw mixture calibration off and you have to make allowances.

here's a Fram Ford 90 degree PCV valve. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FRM-FV202/ looks like it's for '62 and up small blocks. $1.95! i might get two spares to put in rollaway! that's close enough for any y block. have a good one!

This is an easy setup with inline PCV. The gas exits at the rear valley cap.

The same Ford screw-in PCV that fits in the manifold I showed earlier didn't work at all when installed in the rear valley pan vent (draft tube opening) of my T-bird 312. Idle RPM went up in the neighborhood of 700-750 rpm and I couldn't tune it out - acted like a big vacuum leak - which it was. After looking through a handfull of the dumb things, I came to the (DUH) conclusion that all the PC valve was, was a checkvalve to prevent backfires from pressurizing the engine interior - and otherwise it was open suction, orficed by the way it was mounted, piped and internally ported. So I tried a few different orfices hidden in the piping until the carb tuning came back under control (and I still had a bit of constant vacuum on the PCV inlet). |

here's how a PCV system and the PCV valve work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pcv_valve. putting a later type PCV system on is for High Performance y blocks. it can be used on restored cars if you save all your old parts for one you sell the car. an original PCV system is pretty close in doing a good job as the later setup. have a nice day!
