Woven for mechanical brakes. Molded for hydraulics.

Lawson, Just curious where you got that information.? I changed to riveted woven on our 46 and they stop much better than the bonded ones they replaced. "They say they wear faster" but after 15,000 they have not worn much. What is your source of information? John

There was a posting here on the barn a little while back. I have heard that since hydraulic brakes came out on Fords in 39. All hearsay of course.

Old linings are far better than any new ones. Not hearsay. Expert real world testimony from Ray Helgers III, after having used modern lining in a '40. It could not lock up the brakes, and it would not stop worth a darn. Changed them them out for NOS ones. Old ones "put you right through the windshield".

When asbestos was removed from brake linings years ago, the stopping power was diminished somewhat. At our shop, we often times find the the primary (short) lining is facing the wrong way. They face forward. If your car has wheel cylinders with a large and small ends, be sure the long lining is to the large end of the cylinder.

The shoes are cut to match the curvature of the drum.

Jake, I was thinking to ask the same question as you on woven versus molded since I will need to do the rear wheels on my 47. Supereal mentioned that asbestos was removed from lining and performance dropped. I can only assume the replacement material was harder in order to last longer. That seemed to be about the time that places like PepBoys offered lifetime warranty on lining? IICR. Ok, heresay but I had read that places that cater to heavy trucks have brake material that has better stopping ability than stuff you get from AZ, PB, etc. They can reline your shoes.
I just remembered that every part store would "arc" the new shoes you bought from them. I wonder where that equipment went since parts store no longer do this.

I wonder if there is still a shop around that can do it, i'm putting new shoes on my 41 and would like to do that. I could only find one shop that could turn the drums. Got the shoes from Speedway, along with king pins with needle bearings. Got lot's of work going on, having fun. Al

Many shops that rebuild heavy truck brakes can still arc shoes. Our local NAPA does it.

Find a shop that does brake linings and clutches, there must be one not too far from you. Take in your drums and they should size them and then give you the correct size linings ready to go. You may get lucky and they might even have different compounds.

The shoes I just pulled off appeared to have copper impregnated in them, they were hardly worn but the drums were badly grooved. They were Ford shoes, and one the back shoe was blue on the side, the front shoe was white on the outside edge. Don't know if they were installed correctly or not that's how they were when I bought the car. I'll make sure they are put in as advised above. Thanks Al

Are the grooves evenly spaced and continuous around the drum and the entire drum? The reason I asked is some drum lathes step through the drum as they go. Very fine steps but in some cases the drums are not machined smooth.
