Lincoln Zephyr Gears
Last April I pulled my transmission out of my 41 Pickup for a rebuild. I found the cluster gear was missing two teeth from second gear. After checking several suppliers I finally found a set of gears. At the time no one had stock gears, but I found a supplier who had a set of Lincoln Zephryr gears in stock. I had heard the aftermarket gears were noisy so I asked how the gears he had were. I was assured he had used several sets with no problems. After less then 3,000 miles, the gearbox needs gears again. The cluster is missing about four teeth on third gear and first gear is missing a tooth. When I rebuilt the gearbox all parts were replaced, and clearances checked(shims, spacers, syncro assembly, roller bearings, everything but the reverse idler). Anyone else had problems with the aftermarket Lincoln Zephyr gears? Truck was driven gently with no jack rabbit starts, and easy shifts into all gears.

Re: Lincoln Zephyr Gears
I had Vern Tardel rebuild the tranny in my 41 in 2003, I've had no trouble at all. I running a 350 Small Block in front ot it, with a stock rearend with 3:54s and a Mitchell.
Where are you located ? Get a hold of Tardel he is in Sants Rosa CA or Mac Van Pelt, hes in Cincinnati. |

Re: Lincoln Zephyr Gears
I'm missing something here... Cluster gear missing teeth on THIRD gear? Third gear doesn't use the cluster. The synchro meshes with the teeth on the back end of the input shaft to provide direct drive right through from input to output.

Re: Lincoln Zephyr Gears
He sold you some off shore gears. LZ gears are hard to find NOS. You are not the only one who has tried them. I have heard alot of bad stories about them not lasting.

Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology . The 26 tooth gear on the cluster is missing about four teeth and one on the 18 tooth gear. Mike |

Re: Lincoln Zephyr Gears
Ooooh... That sounds odd! Usually, teeth are lost on a gear by trying to engage them while they're in motion. The front gear on the cluster (the 26 tooth part) is constantly engaged with the 18 tooth gear on the input shaft.
