how to take apart wide five hubcaps?
The 39 pickup is just about ready to hit the streets. I want to repaint the outer part of the hubcaps but need to remove the inner stainless piece. What is the trick to seperating these parts?
Thanks, Seth |

Re: how to take apart wide five hubcaps?
Are you saying that the stainless part has an outer and inner? Seems like if I drill a hole in the back side of the stainless it would go through the stainless. How would air pressure pop them off? These are 39 hubcaps.

Re: how to take apart wide five hubcaps?
The stainless is only the smaller center cap which is pressed on to the steel main cap.You carefully drill a hole from the backside thru the steel but not touching the stainless portion. There's a small space in side between the stainless and steel. Air pressure will pop off the stainless cap.
This works on original Ford caps but I think there were some aftermarket caps made that were one piece. Look close at the outer edge of the center stainless piece and you should be able to see the separation. Last edited by Gary in La.; 03-04-2012 at 10:23 PM. Reason: More info |

36 Hubcaps
Hi,
Are 36 ford hubcaps the same? It sounds that way. Thanks, Bruce

Getting them back together
OK, so say I've got them apart. What's the trick to getting them back together? Imagine that's the hard part.

Lube them with electricians conduit lube and pop them on.

I used an end mill instead of a drill bit, less chance of cutting into the stainless. I think I used 1/8 inch. Make sure that you place a box with towels etc under the cap when you blow it off.

Do not paint the area covered by the stainless! There is very little clearence and makes it nigh impossible to get the stainless back on.

Re: Getting them back together
This too was my next question. I looked this morning and I understand the air method now. I will not paint the part that the stainless clamps to for clearance.

Here is Lawson Cox's answer on a similar earlier post. Ed
"I agree with deuce lover. To put them back on, get a gallon paint can, put a towel over it, place the stainless center on the cap, place the cap, stainless down "over" the towel, everything lined up and centered, then gently sit on the hubcap and it will pop right back in place." |

Re: how to take apart wide five hubcaps?
Well, I'm going to pop these centers off paint and repair, then try your installation methods. Thanks!

Re: how to take apart wide five hubcaps?
Make sure first they are the original two piece caps.
The later NORS caps were one piece only. |

Re: how to take apart wide five hubcaps?
These were the two piece caps. I CAREFULLY drilled a 3/16 in hole in the back side. Took the air gun, shot some air and they poped right off. No rust behind there, just very nice original black ford paint. Now the hard work begins. Need to work the dents out, sand the scratches and buff them.
