Rear Spring Clips - New Question
Decided to start a new thread on this topic.
I have a new question regarding the center bottom plate, aka "rear spring clip": I just saw some material from a parts catalog dated July 1, 1931 that shows and lists specs for 3 clips; the height specs are: A-5708 0.84375" (27/32, I think - hard to read) A-5709 0.53125" (17/32) A-5710 0.6875" (11/16) Parts catalogs list two: A-5708-A 1.125" A-5708-B 0.625" So 3 versions vs 2 with none of the measurements matching. Can someone resolve this conundrum? Maybe inside measurements vs outside? Thanks! Dave Last edited by Pilotdave; 07-25-2018 at 01:16 PM. |

Re: Rear Spring Clips - New Question
Here's a link to a thread that includes a great chart on rear springs put together by Marco Tahtaras:
https://fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62383 So a couple of questions arise: 1. How to read the measurements in the right hand column; 2. How are the spring clips associated with the springs depicted in the left hand column? Dave |

Re: Rear Spring Clips - New Question
Not sure what you are calling 'spring clips'? If it is the pieces that are used on the U-bolts, they come in different thicknesses for different number of spring leaves.

Re: Rear Spring Clips - New Question
Thanks, Jim. "Spring clips" = "Center Bottom Plate". I'm trying to sort out which Clip/Plate goes with which spring thickness....and how the two versions offered in a couple of parts catalogs correlate to the ones described in the 1931 Parts & Price List.

I'm told that the 1931 Parts & Price List description for A-5709 has a typo; it should read "1-7/32", not "17/32". That makes it pretty close to the 1-1/8" listed in current parts catalogs. A very helpful fellow in CA decoded the cross-sections for me. Here's what I gleaned - in my words, not his! 1. Top cross-section is the top leaf. It and the cross-section below it are the same thickness/dish - hence the same light yellow color. 2. In the other 3 cross-sections...dimensions to the right are the thickness at outer edge of the spring. Dimensions in the center are the "dish" in the leaf. "1/4 R" is the radius of the edge of the leaf. "2 1/4" is the leaf width. And the colors correspond to those in the spring composition column to the left. Thus, using the composition chart gives the number and colors of the leaves while the right side gives the dimensions of the color-coded leaves from the composition chart. Clear as mud? Hopefully I got this part right! Progress! |

FYI - Regarding part names - spring clip is the u-bolt looking part. It is part A-5705. Part A-5708 and A-5709 are the "spring clip bars. The parts list shows the body type they are used for. The parts list shows which springs are used by body type.
