Why wont it start!!!!
Ok I have replaced the battery. I see fuel coming out of the carb it just turns over and over but will not start. The choke how far do you turn it to the right or left? How do I know if they key lock on the distributer is good or bad? How do I know if I am getting spark?

Re: Why wont it start!!!!
#1 you should only need to open the GAV about 1/2 a turn and then close down to 1/4.
#3 Have someone crank it while you hold the coil wire next to a bolt. If you get a strong spark then the problem is in the Dist. Others will chime in on where to check for voltage. Mike

Re: Why wont it start!!!!
Quick Check: Ignition (Secondary)
To check the secondary side of the electrical system, remove one brass spark plug connector from the distributor and position it approximately a ¼ of an inch above its terminal on the distributor. Using the key turn the engine over and observe the gap to see if a bright yellowish-blue spark, with a loud snapping sound is being created No spark/poor spark; Culprits include: Failed condenser Lower plate wire broke or shorted Point gap closing up Pop-out cable to tight and grounding out in distributor |

Re: Why wont it start!!!!
The GAV [ choke rod] should be about 1/2 turn out from lightly seated.
The GAV [choke rod] should be pulled out fully while turning over the engine, but, only for about 3 engine revolutions. The left hand lever on the steering column should be fully up. The fuel lever turned on The key turned on. The way to check for spark is to pull the coil wire and set it about 1/4" from a good ground. Turn the engine over with key on and there should be a spark. If there is then remove a spark plug and ground it while turning over the engine again and look for a spark. If there is no spark then let us know. The spark plugs must be dry and not fuel saturated. |

Re: Why wont it start!!!!
Just think for a second.
Where does one need both fuel & spark for an "internal" combustion engine? How about in the combustion chamber ........ immediately below all 4 spark plugs. One old reliable vintage quick test years ago that still works today is to: 1. First get a spark plug wrench, open the hood, & after engine turns over & over with the choke pulled out, with the fuel shut off valve in the "open" position, "immediately" remove all 4 spark plugs ........ if all 4 plugs are wet with fuel, the combustion chamber is at the very least getting fuel. 2. Second with plugs left out, laying on their sides & grounded, & connected to the distributor, turn key "ON", allow engine to rotate ....... if good healthy sparks are seen in spark plug gaps, the combustion chamber is at least getting spark. 3. If either, or both of 1. & 2. is not functioning, one at least has at least one or two places to start. 4. Or you could change everything under the hood, never know why it never started in the first place, & the next time it does not start, just change everything under the hood a second time. 5. If you try 1. & 2., & let us know what happens ...... further help will be on its way. |

Re: Why wont it start!!!!
Sounds like you are already on the right track where it is time to get a wiring diagram & a multi-meter & start checking current flow & grounds from at the new battery.

Re: Why wont it start!!!!
Do you have a test light or volt meter ?
Check for power at the coil and then at the points. Should have voltage at points movable arm when open and none when closed. With coil wire near a ground there should be a spark while opening and closing points. Plus, does the engine have compression ? Is the rotor turning ? I guess we should check the basics first. |
