The panel truck spare tire carrier is all together different than the pickups. If you have access to the green book it will show you.

Check the pictures. Pickups uses the hole in the passenger side running board. The 40 panel is integrated into the side of the body. I don't know about the 38 but it may be the same.

The spare tire carrier rod is identical on 1938 and 39 half-ton pickups and panel deliveries. Both used the same runningboards and front fenders. Both have the rod with the two "eyes" in the middle. The 36 and 37 half-ton pickup and panel delivery used a rod with a single "eye" in the middle. Some early 38's may have used the single "eye" spare carrier rod. All four years, 36-39 used the same wide five spare tire flange. Some of the panel deliveries came with a metal spare tire cover similar to the one on 36 Deluxe passenger cars. I believe there were two different ones, one for the 6:00 16 and another for the 6:50 16. Some of the 38 and 39 pickups and panels used the same frying pan type locking spare that was used on the 36 and 37 model years. Some of all 4 years had no spare tire lock of any type. The 40 spare carrier as pictured above was not used until 1940.

Here is the breakdown from the Green Bible, I learned something my 39 has the bracket on the box like the 40 and 41 panel delivery, it must have been changed years ago.

Regards,

Brian

Thanks for posting the picture. The picture does not show the "two-eyed" rod used in 38/9, but if you check the parts book, they carry a different part number. I believe the 40 used the bracket mounted on the side of the bed. I know a friend of mine and I had to cut one off of a 40 bed to load the bed into a van. The pictures in the Green Bible are "typical" pictures and do not show all model year changes. If you look at the picture you posted, there is another obvious error on the picture. It shows the year range of 36-41 for the spare mount, but pictures the wide-five flange. The 40 and 41 did not use the wide five.
