Poorly fiting seat bottom 28 roadster
I am considering re-upholstering my interior on my 1928 roadster. I am concerned about the way the bottom of the seat cushion fits into the steel seat tray. It fits the worst on the passenger side I don't want to order new upholstery to cover the springs and find out it is not a good fit. is it possible I have springs from a different year or truck or something??

Re: Poorly fiting seat bottom 28 roadster
I would order a new seat spring while I was at it. I had a 29 roadster and the fit was much closer than that, almost to the point of pressing it in place. Someone along the line must have used a non roadster spring or maybe a 28/29 in place of a 30/31.

Snyder's makes the springs, but if you were going to order an upholstery kit from LeBarron Bonney you can order the springs from them and have the upholstery installed on the springs so it comes ready to install.

Great Idea John. I am thinking of Lebaron Bonney. I will give them a call about the springs tomorrow

Re: Poorly fiting seat bottom 28 roadster
That's an old Carlin spring from Texas. You should do better with a new Snyder spring.

The 28 should have a wooden base for the spring to attach to. Then the cover goes over the springs and is nailed to the bottom of the wood form. It looks like the wood form is missing.

Roadsters, four door Phaetons, Closed Cabs, Open Cabs, and rumble seats, never had wooden frames. All others did.

I am going to buy a new interior set from Lebaron Bonney. They also sell springs and that will also put the whole thing together. I am thinking of sending them a template of my seat pan to check the dimensions before I commit.

Re: Poorly fiting seat bottom 28 roadster
A few years ago I bought an upholstered seat from Lebaron Bonney for a roadster. It did not fit well in the seat frame. Its a function of the correct sizing of the spring. I had to strip the upholstery and then modify the spring to make it fit. If you have an original spring, consider rebuilding it.

I do this often. There is an "up-charge" for them (Snyders) custom making the seat springs to the correct dimensions but it worth the few weeks and $$ it takes to have this done. |

Re: Poorly fiting seat bottom 28 roadster
I am definitely going to check the spring dimensions before I buy, thanks for the advice
