Default Painting Bumper Clamps

Seeking suggestions as to a proper paint and color code to use for spraying the inserts on bumper clamps to closely duplicate originals.

They sale a brush on paint for the clamps. Could it not be thinned and sprayed? It's available from Brattons, snyders, etc

Default Painting Bumper Clamps

I thought about this option. Not sure how far the little bottles of paint will go for spraying purposes though.

Do a search as this has been covered before. There
s even someone (can't remember who) who markets a stencil for this application.

Rustoleum sells a very reasonable Royal Blue spray that resembles the Ford blue of the oval shaped medallion. Used it on my clamps, looks great. First apply a light coat of primer.

Might consider using the decal's that Snyder sells, they are a nice fit, look crisp an sharp when installed.

At your local hobby shop, buy a bottle of Testors model paint and pour it into the cavity. It is much easier than masking and spraying. I found the color (and I don't have the paint number) was spot-on for Henry's blue. I did my clamps years ago after the blue decals came off, and they still look great today.

They were originally sprayed through a metal mask. Since the mask could not quite touch the surface you have a 'misted' edge.

I believe if you do a search of the archives there is more information on the mask and the paints.

If you "float" enough paint into the recess of the clamp to eliminate any brush marks it will overlap the edge, but not to worry, after it is dry get a single edge razor blade and scrape off the excess. Works every time.

I second what Leo says. Use a small lettering brush and glob paint into the area until it is full. Dries well and looks good and it is easy to do. Before painting, be sure metal is roughed up with scotchbrite a bit and cleaned with laquer thinner. I used the blue paint I got from TAMS.

simple, either call Jim Brand and he will do it OR, Call Will Cronkite and he sells a stencil or call brattons get the paint, sit down and take your time and have some fun and paint away....

Not to hijack the thread but it is kind of on subject. I have seen on some 31 cars where the color was black. That got me thinking and so I checked out all my old vintage black and white period photos. It's harder to tell but some of the 31's there look like they were black also. I don't have the JS with me, was there a color change and if so, when?

The clamps didn't give me any trouble, but painting that dang '28 center medallion was a pain in the fanny!

I tried the cutout decals and the paint. The decals are very difficult to cut exact. The paint goes on very well and is very easy to apply. I used small brushes from the dollar store. Both available at Snyders, Macs, etc.

I to used a small brush and it was pretty easy to do. The brush marks disappeared. After painting the clamps, I placed them in the oven at about 150 degrees to help eliminate the brush marks. I was pleased with the results.

I found a repro center mid to late 28 clamp with Ford in the center. Since I can't find an original center clamp, I plan on using the repro until I find a restorable original. The paint on the clamp is so so. I would like to repaint it, but it seems like a real tough job. Maybe I should sent it to Gary Karr to paint - ha ha. Gary did an excellent job on his early 28 clamps. I would like to see him paint one.
