Default 51 ford carb.

The carb on my 51 the original type designed with the vaccuum port for the loadamatic dist.I blocked off the port because I am running a Bubbas chevy conversion which needs vaccuum from below the throttle plates.I feel the car should run better than it does and wonder if there is a better carb choice. Thanks Phil

The 2GC works fine, specialy with a bigger engine like a 276 but your stock 239 should run good with the stock Holley. Walt

You might want to check the timing curve. Bubbas distributors are adjustable in both Mechanical and vacuum. Another old timers trick is to being the engine up to a fast idle and slowly bring you hand over the carb. If the engine begins to speed up you're lean. If it stalls out Rich and if it just slows down OK.. An AF meter is more accurate.

How would I go about checking the timing curve?

I am running a 2gc rochester from a 66 v6 jeep and played around with the jets to get it running good, I too am running a chev dizzy from Bubba but with no vacuum advance-I wonder if I should change out to an adjustable vacuum advance. The engine is a 51 merc with a 77b Isky cam, currently running a 3:25 gears in a 9" ford, not really good for around town on hills but great running down the road!!

Phil,
Try setting the initial at 4 degrees....this is with the vac hose off the dist
and the source of vac plugged. I'm talking shade tree stuff here.....crack the throttle
while the timing light is seeing the mark on the pulley and the pointer...you should see
the mark jump about an inch. The throttle cracking thing should be enough to get you
to 2500 rpm. This is a rough and dirty way to determine that things are functioning.
If Bubba set it...it's right.
A properly set up 94 is all you'll ever need.
A bolt on alternative would be a Stromberg 48 which Uncle Max can fast
freight to you. The Stromberg carb eliminates the sometimes erasable vac power
valve and is tuner friendly.

Holley 94 carbs can be fairly easily modified for ported manifold vacuum to the distributor, using the same port on the backside of the carb.
Saves a lot of time and money.

The Holey 94 cannot operate any load a matic distributor. The 94 used on the 8ba engines has a different vacuum sysem for this distributor. However any carb can run the converted SBC distributor as this is NOT ported vacuum, also do not use this port for the chevy distributor as this won't work either Hope yoy understand this. maybe soneone else can explain it better.
The old fart!!!
