exhaust question
Continuing with the 1950's 32 roadster restoration, we have come to the exhaust. We are looking at using Smithy's glasspacks, 22". The smallest inlet I can find is 2" ID. Did they ever make a 1.75" ID set? I ask as our consultant advised using of 1.75" exhaust pipe since being a lowboy some tight bends may be needed.

Re: exhaust question
I bought Brockmans for my ‘51 and was told the same thing. The shop that bent the pipes just dealt with it.......Mark

Re: exhaust question
just have your shop reduce the rear pipe down to size where you exit the muffler ive done the same on mine works a treat you got to remember that factory was a single at 1 1/2" pipe

Re: exhaust question
Since 2" is so much easier to find and has far more options, I just use a bushing in the inlets/outlets of the mufflers to accommodate the 1 3/4 pipe.

I tried it on an old ch#vy 6 with Smithies and it sounded pretty good - all things considered. Not sure how a flathead would sound tho'. |

Re: exhaust question
Porter makes 1-3/4". Expensive but very well built.

Re: exhaust question
I'm a bit favorable to a glass pack or resonator for a bit of sound. Porter is really great.
I ran dual 2" pipes an a couple flatheads. prefer the 1.75 rap (easier to still get). Doesn't seem like a lot but is. The trend is to go with large pipes. Look at diesel 150/300 trucks. Somehow they think they are driving a semi... which doesn't need a 6" pipe. haha Same as the coffee cans on a stock toyota civic. Sounds loud.... |

Re: exhaust question
Flatheads tend to run naturally quiet due the the way the exhaust is routed thru the block, as opposed to an overhead valve motor which spits out the exhaust directly from the cylinder. You would be surprised at how quiet and pleasant the sound of straight pipes from your flathead would be

Re: exhaust question
I was tempted to try these. On Amazon, search 1-3/4" glass packs.

Re: exhaust question
I don't see anything wrong with straight pipes. More reasonable also.

Re: exhaust question
I used Smithy’s off of Amazon, the shortest I could get. The muffler shop I used (Airport Muffler in Snohomish, WA) did an excellent job, they get louder the more you drive it. I am absolutely satisfied. Free shipping too!

Re: exhaust question
Before you click "buy," make sure you have room to get a 22" muffler up in there. You may have to go shorter.

Re: exhaust question
so, near a month later still deciding on the mufflers as the 22" smithy's will likely be too long. I'll update when we decide. Did take the car out for a very short spin with open Fenton headers. Needs some tuning which means getting the exhaust on.
