Default Period Newspaper Advertising

Here are a few advertisements I found in our local newspaper from 1929. These newspapers are available to browse at our local museum. During the first couple of months there was advertising from the local dealer. Later in the year it appears that the Ford Company placed the ads, there was no mention of the local dealer.

is this a lightly-populated area? the one ad talks about 42 buyers over a year period and I always thought that Ford dealers in that era, and particularly 1929, dealt in high-volume.

Yes, Placerville is a small town in the Sierra foothills created during the 1849 Gold Rush. Even now the town population is around 11K and the county has less than 200K, including South Lake Tahoe which is in our county.

While I was looking at the advertisements I noticed that there were no addresses on most of the ads. If you were in Placerville in 1929 it probably took you less than a minute to find out where the Ford Dealer was. I'd be there wasn't a single phone in town either.

John Studebaker got his start here building wheel barrows for the miners.

Hi Tom,

I'd be interested in any info that you have on the Ford dealers in P-Ville. I do know that in '29 the Ford dealer was just off of Main Street on Sacramento Street/Highway 49. So far I have only found one terrible photo of it in that location but haven't given up on finding a better photo yet. Could be that 460 was an earlier or later Ford dealer location though.
