Default steering worm gear removal on 41 ford

finally getting to my 41 ford project and I took steering box apart. bearings fell out in pieces, races destroyed. Have another ford gear box, probably a 38 or 39, with different length shaft but same components. I want to remove the worm gears. Is that possible? I understand they are keyed and have a press fit. Anybody hear ever remove one and have any suggestions? I cant see any keyway and all I can presume is that u heat the gear up and wack the bejesus out of it.

.....You'll need a proper press to push it off, they're extremely tight...see pics here: http://www.nz-hotrod.com/vbulletin/s...rive-1932-Ford scroll down the page to see relevant pics..

If you can't get the worm off....or the shaft gets bent/damaged in the process, we have new shafts with the worm already pressed on.

Those worm gears will PRESS off and back on the shafts but there is a learning curve and procedure to doing this correctly. I have done maybe a dozen when rebuild steering boxes for my cars and for friends cars. There is an allignment tab that must go together correctly when pressing these parts together. Heating the gear and "wacking the bejesus" out of it is NOT the way to go!

hey thanks for all your advice. Given that the races for the bearings on both sides of the worm gear are extremely worn and pitted beyond reuse, I am going to have to rethink this project.
