Muffler Heat Deflector
Did the Model A come originally with a muffler heat deflector?
Just found the source of my awful rattling sound thinking it to be the radiator rock shield which I just took off. Ended up being a broken rear bracket on a heat deflector. If these deflectors are not original, are they necessary or useful? Thanks for any and all input and suggestions.

Re: Muffler Heat Deflector
Not original equipment, supposed to reduce heat, but varying opinions on the Ford Barn on that. Mine doesn’t have one so I can’t say if they work or not.

Re: Muffler Heat Deflector
I bought one and one bracket soon broke off, just like you describe. I don't think I had it on long enough to know if it even made any difference. That deflector is now taking up a less than prominent spot hanging on my garage wall.

Re: Muffler Heat Deflector
I made my own to copy the one from the usual suppliers, but took it off after a year or two because I didn’t think it was doing any good,

Re: Muffler Heat Deflector
Took mine off. There are insulating mats you can buy for cars that attach to the inside under the seats and other places. They help cut down the noise and heat gain or loss. Most useful during a rebuild.

I have one car with it on and a pickup without. Can’t tell any difference.

Re: Muffler Heat Deflector
I did add 3/8 thick sound deadening mat under the carpet seems to help a little,I think the type with reflective foil might work well under the floor boards, another project for my car this spring. EBay has a wide assortment of sound and heat deadening material.

Re: Muffler Heat Deflector
I hear people talk about these devices from time to time. My passenger compartment doesn't really get hot.

Re: Muffler Heat Deflector
I had one for a short time. Useless!
Hot air comes in around the pedals is the same with or without the heatshield and that hot air blows straight up my (driver) legs. |

Re: Muffler Heat Deflector
I am thinking of wrapping this around my muffler, but putting some small aluminum or steel channel iron spacers in between. Any thoughts?

Bruce
I wouldn’t do it. Heat needs to get off the muffler somehow I’d think Last edited by Oldbluoval; 03-13-2022 at 07:00 AM. |

Re: Muffler Heat Deflector
Bruce your idea of placing a sheet of uninsulated steel or aluminum spaced off the hot surface of the muffler is the way to go. If you standoff at a minimum of 1/2" the air layer between the 2 surface will act as an insulator. Air is a poor conductor of heat. This is the same principle used on wood stoves for protecting wall surfaces from getting hot.
