Oil canister for EAB 52 Ford
Greetings, I need a replacement oil filter canister for a few reasons. The one installed on my engine does not have a drain plug. When I install a new filter, I have to lower it slowly to keep from slopping old oil on to the engine. Also, the bracket is broken on the head. This is, except for the carb and air filter, a stock 52 EAB Fordomatic. ( now someone is gonna inform me that Fordomatics ain't EAB's ).
Anywho, I can't locate any parts, used or new, with my limited skills, so any help would be appreciated. Also, is the lower bolt in the water jacket, or can I remove it without draining the radiator? Yours truely, JPL Last edited by jplutz; 02-03-2024 at 10:09 PM. Reason: Wrong image |

Thanks Pete, but I clicked on the wrong image and I didn't know how to correct the mistake. I thought I had an engine bay pic, but I must have erased it. JPL

Re: Oil canister for EAB 52 Ford
Its been a while since I last changed engine oil and filter on my 52 Merc but pretty sure I used a suction gun to empty the used oil from the filter cannister. No way I'd be putting a clean new filter into used oil.

Re: Oil canister for EAB 52 Ford
Actually I use an old Turkey baster to suck out the remaining oil in the filter housing/canister. Then take paper towels and wipe the rest out.
The bolts that hold the oil filter housing/canister on, do not go into the water jacket of the head. I think this is the housing/canister you are referring to. |

Re: Oil canister for EAB 52 Ford
The early filters ('48-'49) bolted onto the head studs, not the separate bolt bosses. Make sure you get the right one.

JPL…..a picture of where your canister bolts to the head would clear this up some. I haven’t seen one of those brackets break, but I’m sure it’s possible. The methods mentioned above for getting the old oil out of the bottom are what I use. I’ve got a few canisters……I might be able to help you out……Mark

Re: Oil canister for EAB 52 Ford
Thank you all for your responses. This is the first flathead I have worked on since 1962, and I have forgotten more than I knew. Somewhere on Utube I saw a canister with a drain plug and that was being used to drain it during an oil change, so I thought mine was wrong. There are so many things out of place on this car, that I thought this was just another one.
On hindsight, Ralph, Bob and MercCruzer are correct and I must have had my head up my rear to put a clean filter in dirty oil. Watta a dunce. Any way, Mark, I just uncovered the car and took a few pics of the canister and broken bracket. Here they are: So you can see why I ask about the water jacket since the bolt is alongside the sparkplug hole. JPL Last edited by jplutz; 02-04-2024 at 03:23 PM. Reason: Update note |

Re: Oil canister for EAB 52 Ford
JPL,
Thanks for the photos. Most of this is already covered. The oil filter cannisters did not have a drain at least since 1949. Starting in 1950, the cannister bolts to the head, so there is no intrusion into the water jacket. Prior to '50, the cannister mounted under head bolts. Also, this break on the lower mounting tab is common. I've seen several of them welded. I also drain the filer with every oil change with a suction gun, then paper towels to clean out the residue. Re: Oil canister for EAB 52 Ford
A good welder could fix that bracket and a little paint would make it good as new. Make sure you check that lower hose on the filter in case it is old and brittle like mine was. Luckily mine broke while the engine was idling in the shop. Not out on the road. The oil pumps out of that broken line very quickly. I had a hydraulic shop make me a new one. Not cheap but good.

Re: Oil canister for EAB 52 Ford
It would take about 20 minutes to MIG weld that broken bracket.
If the canister doesn't leak don't waste your money on a replacement. |

A replacement wouldn’t cost him anything.....or I would weld that one for him....Mark

Re: Oil canister for EAB 52 Ford
Mine broke in the exact same place. I had it welded and repainted it and it is as good as new.
