Default Flathead A Roadster

I know this is a FH V8 restorers forum but there's a Flathead A Highboy roadster on Pew's Place and on a thread I started on the HAMB that deserves a good look. It has the look. Sorry if this thread offends some of you, I go both ways, restored or modified cars are all welcome in my garage.

A Roadster On Pew's Place. Lynn still does a blog occasionally when he's able.

How can the steering possibly work?

My thoughts also. Can't see a draglink anywhere - doesn't seem to be anything attached to the spindles other than the tie rod. Obviously we're missing something!!

A couple more 'teaser' shots that I was able to find. First pic suggests POSSIBLY a drag link going to a "Y" connection on the TIE ROD?

Shock arms appear to be attached to ends of main spring leaf?

Lots of creative thinking there to make that all work. Nicely done.

Neat car.

Steering is a cross steer box. You can see the pitman arm in the one of the picts. Coop posted. Drag link goes under car to the pass side spindle. Two u-joints to get the alignment of the steering rod correct since the box seems to be mounted under the motor mount of the frame rail.

Ah, ah, AH! Look again, Tim! You can see in the pic BELOW that only the tie rod goes to the RIGHT spindle. That's why I SUGGESTED above that the drag link must tie into the tie rod via some sort of "Y" fitting.

I did a tie rod like that with a tapered hole in the tie rod under the car when I built the custom chassis for the Green Hornet.

No expert on frame or steering geometry, but is that set up something like on my jailbar trucks? I've knocked them apart for kingpins and then put them back together, but it looks familiar. I really do love that roadster.

A modified rack and pinion hooked to the tie rod? The U joints are hooked to something.
Is the stock steering box cut off the shaft and moved forward and hooked directly to the tie rod? HMMMMMM.

I believe this is a beautiful piece of workman ship. It's obvious the owner/builder loves his job. Something like this is not for everybody, but some people jump out of perfectly good airplanes, just for fun!!!

Be careful if you decide to use Rack and Pinion steering. A local guy found a rack that fit his '47 Plymouth perfectly in a "rear-steer" position. The trouble was, it was from a "front-steer" car.
