Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
Man, that's funny - the bend - I like that! Yes, rain can be a problem and I remember when speed week was cancelled a few times because of it? THat would be a bummer but then again, I would still have a good time, no matter what ...

Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
Another place to stay in West Wendover is the KOA campground. Need a tent, and reservations way ahead. Real reasonable, showers etc. The bend is a bit primitive, but lots of folks hang there hat there. It was a little tough there this year with the rain making the area sloppy.

Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
The city is working on a Bonneville museum on the east side of town with RV parking. It was open last year. That might be another option.
Also, on the SCTA website, there were some homeowners advertising a basement apartment that was available. I think it was only $75 per night, a smoking deal. You might search old posts there for some leads. |

Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
Well, here's an update - somewhat - I'm looking for someone who might like to make the trip with me. We share all of the food, gas, lodging, and whatever tickets we buy costs - repairs (if any) are on me since it's my car.
My buddy is not able to make the trip and if I do not find anyone to go, it might put the kabosh on things .... let me know! |

Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
Tom - just a practical question - and sort a sad to be concerned - but what will you/can you do to minimize that chance of your Roadster being as you stay at various B&B's etc along the way - that would be my big fear.

Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
When I read this I automatically thought of Rumbleseats neat stories of traveling in his 34. I have traveled all over our country in my hotrods and have never had a problem. I do maintain my insurance coverage though. All you can do is take common sense precautions and enjoy your car. TomT I sure hope it comes together for you, great trip for you and whomever. If I was close it would be me. I have been to Speed Week once, in an RV with two friends. Great time, but better in an old car of some type. Best of luck to you.

Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
For security reasons I do like a B&B over a hotel. However, if I'm at a hotel, I try and park close to my room and out of sight (and hopefully out-of-mind) under a light car cover. It's a possibility of course that I could lose my car but that would be true of just about any car you take on a long trip, right? It's really all about the hassle ....
I too remember Rumbleseat and his adventures - it's insured (and I may up the amount before I go - I'm w/Grundy), but after that, it's out of my hands. I built it to drive and drive it I'm going to do .... okiedokie - and anyone here on the 'Barn who might consider making the trip with me - I would entertain anyone riding shotgun from anywhere in the country - Tulsa, OK included. You don't have to be from the east coast .... |

Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
Well, I just got off the phone with the Rolling Bones guys - they have a pretty good deal going and if I'm flying solo, it might just be the best deal in town. They will have a trailer, tools, and know-how for the hot rods making the trip but there is a kitty you need to chip in to for that - the amount depends on the number of hot rods that are going. They also have a food kitty for the trip - both kittys would be less for me since I would probably meet up with them in Altoona, IA and break off from them on the way back in Nebraska or there abouts. They take 6 days going out but only 3-4 coming home - so, on the homeward bound I might just zig-zag my way back, making stops to visit HAMBers and 'Barners - take my time. Rooms are already secured throughout the trip, especially in Wendover, so there's no issue or worries there. They do make stops in some neat areas, visit some cool shops, etc - not necessarily all "'Barner" friendly with all stockers mind you but I'm OK with that since I'm not a "stock" vehicle builder anyway. Besides, it's all about the ride and the people you meet and I hope to meet many of you along the way there and back.
So, let me know if anyone wants to share an adventure with me and I'll fill you in on the details .... |

Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
I have been a few times, but drove my roadster last year. One of the most fun things I did. I ran 55-65 the whole time, car did great. A trip you will never forget

Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
An update - I had a couple inquiries about riding shotgun and the first to do so was Chuck Lessard, 41Ford1, here on the 'Barn. We will make arrangements to meet up to make the trip but we're both excited as hell to be going together. Thank you to all that inquired and I will keep you in mind should someone else need someone to ride shotgun.
But - wait - that isn't all .... Another friend of mine who I drove out to Calif with in my first 40 coupe for the "40 Ford Is 50 Tour" (put together by the late Art Branum of Mr40s fame) in 1990, will also be driving out with me. It's a street rod but it is a 40 coupe and a really nice one at that. He may also have a friend of his with a 34 Ford who may want to drive out as well - whew - we're getting quite the entourage and the fun is just beginning! |

Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
Tom, glad to hear the trip is beginning to come together for you. Having Chuck ridin' shotgun with you sounds great. If he's as good at navigating as he is at making roadside repairs, you two will make a good team . It would be super if you would do a running post here or on the H.A.M.B. with pictures, from start to finish of this trip. That way we would feel like we are right there riding with you.

I'm leaning towards doing the Rolling Bones caravan on the way out and then doing our own thing on the way back since the Bones take only 3 days or so to get back - too quick for me. I'd really like to catch up with some 'Barners and HAMBers on the way back .... |

Re: A 'Barner Run to Bonneville
Riding shotgun with Tom is going to be the most excellent adventure! Got my maps, Garmin, camera and the kitchen pass. I'm good to go. It will be hard to wait until then.
