Default cooler spark plug

I am running W16Y Champion Sparkplugs in my car right now. I was reading Jim's "My Four Banger and Me" book (Good book by the way and very informative). He recommends a cooler plug for a High compression head. What would be one step down from W16Y? I found some W14 Champions. Would those work? They don't have to be champions. Some of the charts I am looking at online are hard to follow. Open to any recommendations.

Thanks,
Marty

I found a great post by Larry Brumfield in 2010. It answered my question.

Re: Model a spark plugs
This might help select the correct plug:

1. From 1962 Until 1967 I drove a Model A engine with the "Head with the large B" for 40,000 miles. This head is very similar to the 5.5 heads of today.

Driving conditions affect the plug performance.

These were 25 mile minimum one way trips at 50 MPH. There was plenty of time to get engine good and warm on each trip.

Plugs used were C16C which is same heat range as W16Y and others in the table that 29er posted:

C16C plugs were replaced by W16Y in 1979 ...

These plugs worked just great under those conditions.

2. Then I moved to town (same car same engine). Trips are 10 miles mostly with stops where engine may cool off some.

The C16C, 3076 and W16Y plugs I tried get all sooty and foul out.

As mentioned above W18 is a good plug under these conditions.

W18 by Champion is the plug I have used for the last 5 years or so. Works well in stop and go driving.

Note if you start the car and idle and do not drive it, then turn if off, then the W18 plugs may not stay clean either under those conditions.

I should say that I use the car occasionally to make the 50 mile round trip to the old location from the 1962 trips. And the plugs work fine.

Note if you have a Gravley Model L then keep the C16C, 3066, and W16Y plugs. They work just fine in the old one cylinder engine!

Excellent snow blower ... throws snow 35 to 40 feet! Cuts right through 3 to 4 foot drifts.

Kind of large for in town and with the cars and houses so close, it throws the rocks and sprinkler heads just as far!!

Hope this helps.

So that's where that sprinkler head came from!
