Installing Top Molding for 30-31 Pickup
I am replacing the top fabric and molding on my 30-31 Pickup. The old molding was hidem' welt. I am going to replace it with the steel two piece metal molding. I would like to know how the molding is installed. Should bend it to fit the top with the top piece attached to the bottom piece? Or do I just bend the bottom piece to match the curve on the top? How do I install the top piece on to the bottom piece? Do I slide it on ? Or should I try to snap it on?
Thanks Bob Johnson |

Re: Installing Top Molding for 30-31 Pickup
I just did mine and it was interesting. Fortunately I had the old one and could use it as a guide. The back piece with the holes tacks down first and
then you snap the cover over it. Make sure you cut it long enough to meet up with rain gutters on both sides. The front piece has more of compound curve when it reaches the gutters and is also cut at an angle. I did not do really well on that one. That one you nail down and then peen over the edges to close it up. Prime before install. Mask and finish paint after. Good luck. |

Should I pre-bend the moldings before nailing them down? If so how? One at a time or together?
thanks bob |

Re: Installing Top Molding for 30-31 Pickup
I'm attempting this same metal 2-piece trim on the rear of my 29 Tudor and it's proving a real pain in the proverbial. I managed the front because it is a reasonably simple curve, but the rear bends in two directions. Any tips from someone that has had success before?
Bending the top cap is the tricky part. A smooth curve seems impossible! It wants to buckle as I bend it. Thanks all, Gus |

Re: Installing Top Molding for 30-31 Pickup
This topic has been covered before on another thread. Bend the top one first to fit. Start nailing it down in the middle. With a pencil, mark all the holes that will line up with nail areas first. Work out to the gutters. Next is to bend and install the cap piece. I found that if I accidentally engaged their fit, it was best to slide them apart rather than pulling them apart. Pulling them apart uses up their tight fit. I gotta go....
