35 fan clearance
I am restoring a 35 coupe, It has a 37 engine with the 35 heads. When I mount the generator and fan, the fan hits the radiator hoses. I have the radiator slanted back as far as the 12 inch hoses will allow. Don't have the body on yet so don't know how far the rad. should slant back. I have two aluminum intakes, one the generator mounts higher is marked 1935.The other is lower by about an inch and a half. I beleive my Gen. and pully are 35. Should I be useing the lower intak? My fan belt is 54 inches.

Re: 35 fan clearance
How about some pictures and measurements? Maybe you have the wrong fan (there were several lengths over the early V8 years) and maybe the wrong manifold.

Re: 35 fan clearance
I had all kinds of fun in mounting the gen.-fan arrangement in my '36, see thread:
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showth...7555#post47555 There are quite a few combinations of these parts that can be hard to correctly identify at swap meets or on ebay. In my case, I finally found a fan that was close but still had to trim the blade tips to get clearance for the ignition coil, which may not have been necessary had I used the correct coil for '36 instead of the earlier (and higher) one. |

Re: 35 fan clearance
You are probably fitting a 37 fan which is I think 1 1/2" bigger in dia than a 35-36 fan.

Re: 35 fan clearance
I believe the 37 Ford fan is the same diameter as the 35/36 Ford, but is has a longer hub distance from the generator pulley to the fan.

You might be using a '37 intake manifold. If you will inspect a correct '35 manifold, you will see that the generator is mounted lower. MIKE |

Re: 35 fan clearance
Dave-
I also have a '35 coupe. Check two things. First, the fan hub distance. It should be one inch. Second, check the intake manifold. it should have a generator "ramp" in the front. Post '36 intakes may look the same but do not have this ramp. If everything is correct you should have about one inch between the fan(in top position)and the radiator with no hose interference. Hope this helps. Tom |

Re: 35 fan clearance
Here is a recent post with pictures illustrating some of the different early Ford intake manifolds. If your intake is like the '35 on this post. I would think you have the wrong generator pulley mount fan or your fan belt is too big in diameter. If you could post some pictures, I'm sure someone could tell you exactly what is wrong.

Re: 35 fan clearance
Thanks Flathead and JM. The pictures did the trick. I do have the correct intake and fan and generator. I will get a shorter fan belt and I think that should do it.
