Default Vacuum assist brakes

So, I just bought this '35 1 1/2 ton truck and it has vacuum assist brakes on it. Just curious, is this standard on the heavy trucks, a factory or dealer installed option, or after market?. Don't know if it works yet

I had a '48 Seagrave fire truck that had a vacuum booster. One day, going to a fire muster, I ran out of gas and the engine quit. When I tried to stop, I found I had NO brakes. At least on my truck, the booster is an absolute necessity. I was literally standing on the brake pedal with both feet with hardly any noticeable effect. Luckily, I had plenty of room to coast to a stop. It was real scary.
