Tried everything
Hey Guys,
Checked the old threads and nothing specifec so here's my issue. Can't remove the cam nut! I started whacking it with a chisel (didn't budge). Tried a little heat and still no go. Borrowed a cam wrench and breaker bar still nothing. Any ideas. Can't get the crank nut off either by the way (no rust). Lock-tite?? Need some help on this on this please. Thanks as always, Pete |

Re: Tried everything
How are you trying to remove the cam nut ?? They certainly can be hard to remove,, but,, generally a rag between the gear teeth and a cheater bar works.. As far as the crank gear is concerned,, its a different animal.. The front of the engine needs to be really really raised and a real gear puller used.. The crank pulley retainer could be tough and I suppose someone could have used lock-tite but its probably just being obstinate so a cheater bar and locking the engine in place should work.. That is,, if you don't have access to an air-gun..

Re: Tried everything
Thanks Guys,
Methinks that lock-tite etc. was used by a guy that felt "tighter is better". Impact wrench could do the trick since even torque isn't working. Engine is out of the car. Pete |

Re: Tried everything
I had one that I ended up using an air hammer...it was able to move it about 1/8" and that was enough so the nut would come off with a large wrench...I even tired heating the nut..that should have worked but not on that one... I use a Harbor Freight Heat Gun and it had been a god send...usually on sale for about $15.
Heat is also what you use to remove locktight..it gets soft with heat. |

Re: Tried everything
If the engine was still in the car I'd use a socket and breaker bar on the crank nut. Lay the breaker bar against the left frame and click the starter with the key OFF.
Now that the engine is out of the car, I's try a quality impact wrench. Some apply much more torque than the cheap ones. |

Re: Tried everything
I wound-up using a cam-nut socket and impact gun on mine... strong-bar did nothing, and I had no way to hold the cam still (cam gear had sheared loose from the hub).

Re: Tried everything
Don't know if they're up to the job but I'm going over to HF and get me an impact wrench. Been looking for an excuse. I tried some heat (propane) but no go.

Re: Tried everything
Took mine off last night. Long (18") breaker bar wouldn't touch it. Air impact wrench took it off like it was only finger tight.
