Default Pulling the valve cover

So I just recieved a box of goodies I ordered. One of them is a valve cover gasket and rubber grommets from rockauto. I could have made one out of cork, but I still needed the grommets, so I threw that one in the Rockauto's cart also.
I'm gonna pull the cover to replace the gasket. Probably gonna check valve lash if I consider I'm up to the task. Any sense in doing any other thing while bowels are at sight?

If there is a lot of sludge under the cover, you might want to clean it out.

check to see if the outside lips on the cover are straight, if not straighten them now, it will help stop any leaks or weeping, on the car and from you, also now is the time to open any oil return holes in the head so the oil can get back to the pan and prevent any oil from getting over the valve guides and causing your engine to smoke, that was a big problem with the new olds v/8's, you would check the oil and think you were low and added more oil and shortly you over filled the pan and then the leaks really started

Start it up with the covers off and make sure the rocker arms are getting oil. You should see some oil dripping off every rocker arm. Lack of oil to the rocker arms is a common Y-block problem.

It helps to restrict the outlet tubes to get more pressurized oil to all the rockers.
