Any thoughts on how to secure the engine and cradle to a wooden pallet for shipping? Will remove wheels from cradle and re-inforce pallet with 1/2" material on top but as to how to secure cradle to pallet I could use some ideas .

We use exhaust clamps to bolt down another type of cradle to pallets.
Drill a hole on each side of the tube and use the big bodywashers on the bottom side.
Thoose long spacers you have on the back support scares me if someone puts the pallet down hard.

Simple and easy would be 2x6 pieces spanning the top of the bottom frame bolted through the 2x6 and the pallet with large washers top and bottom. Then add a wood block under the rear of the pan to the 2x6 to give more support to the rear of the motor. Properly done it would prevent movement on all axis.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Can you post a full size picture of your avatar? Pretty good piloting to get between this palm trees. Gotta be an interesting description...

HDowse....You asked, and here it is! This is a picture of Sky King's Cessna T-50 (N67832) while it was still owned by Paul Mantz Aviation, and before becoming the "Songbird" of Sky King fame. Hopefully you can read that it had been put down on that beach, and was being flown-out in this picture after some repairs. I've had a 60-year + affection for Cessna's T-50/UC-78, and I just happened to come across this picture some time back. This airplane still exists in pieces in Kansas and is, in fact, STILL currently registered with the FAA as N67832. DD

Here is a picture of my shipping crate. Massachusetts to Iowa. Took it to my local Fastenall store and they shipped it on their trucks. $174 and 6 days.

I would not use the metal frame it is setting in now, too easy to deform it in shipping. There are some good post on a simple wooden approach.

Why not encase the entire engine in wood crate style build so as to prevent parts from breaking or getting lost?

I like post#7 with the idea in post#9.....I also agree with #8.....that stand does not look rugged enough for travel.......there’s another .02......Mark

Post #7 looks ideal except for that $^%#@ oil filler tube sticking up like a "single finger salute". I have never been able to get one of those out without using drastic measures. If anybody has any ideas, I just got two of them back from the chrome plater (each one is 1" shorter than stock) and would really like to use them. Sorry for the O/T post; these things are gettin' to me!

The Fastenal manager told me to leave the filler pipe on so the truckers would not try to pile anything on the top so I never tried to remove it.. Trip went perfect.

Great picture! Sure hope he had the props horizontal before the wheels up landing or there would have been more than 'minor' damage. Thanks for the reply and for the info on the carb vent.

Back when my customers could afford to purchase new aircraft engines, They were attached to a pallet with only a steel angle bracket securing the crankshaft to the pallet. There was a pad underneath on the oil sump made from heavy multi plies of cardboard and straps to stabilize it to the pallet. They put a heavy carboard box over the top that fit the pallet and height of the engine exactly. The box edge was then stapled to the pallet all the way around. They were marked "Do Not Stack" all over them. Even back then, the engines cost about $22,000. Now they are closer to $60,000 so folks just overhaul the old ones.

Here's another sample similar to Oldford2's and looks simple enough to make.
Crate motor came on this. Only held down with two straps bolted to it and the pallet.
Engine sat on the engine block only, pan wasn't touching anything.
It was enclosed but wouldn't need to be.
