lowering a 40 coupe
I was going to get the spring eyes reversed to lower the front of my 40 coupe but I see the second leaf wraps halfway around the main leaf eyes.
Is this standard and what do you do with it? The only thing I can see to do is to cut these wrap around ends off short of the main leaf reversed ends. Am I on the right track? All thoughts welcome |

Re: lowering a 40 coupe
Just to clarify.... the eyes dont get reversed, the leaf gets re-arched so it bows in the opposite direction, thus giving the eyes on the top instead of underneath.

Re: lowering a 40 coupe
And there lots of places that will re-arch these old buggy springs? Or, do you have to send the main leaf to a specialty spring place somewhere?

Re: lowering a 40 coupe
you can also just remove the rap around leaf which I did o my 40. They aso can heat up the eye & reverse it then re temper it. Just had a reverse eye done last week for a 32. Was done by re aching, Was done by Atlas spring in City of Industry near LA.

Re: lowering a 40 coupe
Bassman/NZ, I had no idea that is what de-arched really meant for reversed eyes on our springs. Thanks for the clarification.

Re: lowering a 40 coupe
De-arching and reversing the eyes by re-arching is two different things. De-arching means to decrease the arch of the spring. Re-arching means to increase the arch or to reverse the arch.

Thank you TJ. Yes, I mis-read what Bassman was saying. Thanks for the clarification. Obviously, I am new to all of this.

34PHAE.....how much did the front of your 40 drop with removing the wrap around spring? How did it effect the ride?

Re: lowering a 40 coupe
I don't like reversing the eye because the spring is designed to have the support of the second leaf. dearching is safer. If you remove leafs I would put on a sway bar, if you don't already have one... or two

Re: lowering a 40 coupe
Remove the 2nd leaf and add slider buttons between the leafs. I also took the 2 shortest leafs; shortened them and put them under the main leaf to maintain the height of the spring stack. This allows the U bolts to hold the spring properly with the stock clamps installed. This will drop the front about 2 in. and will improve the ride.
