Quest for lincoln yblock pistons
Hey guys, I realize this is a ford forum, but I'm getting desperate trying to find a solution for my lincoln 317 yblock build. I'm wondering if anyone has built one of these, and where in the heck they got their pistons from. I need at least .020 over pistons, and the only option I have found so far is to have some made by Egge machining for more money than I have to spend. Any one have a creative alternative? Early ford ford y block pistons with some machine work?...Buick 6 pistons? Idk....HELP! Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

If you already haven't done it, try the "Late V8 Forum".

Try contacting the Rolling Bones, they are running a Y block in their Bonneville car.

Sealed power and Jahns used to make them as well as others but there likely just isn't enough call for them in this day and age. The Lincoln Y-blocks have a tall deck height so they are likely taller pistons as well. Egge may be the way to go as long as they have blanks to cut on. They would have to cast them if they don't so I don't know what that would cost. Find the original Lincoln part number for the oversize needed and do a search for NOS stuff. There may also be some NORS stuff out there too. One of the folks that frequents the barn goes by BigJob and he may know since he has some big trucks from that era. The F8 used the 317. Some later big trucks used the 332. I'll have to dig pretty deep for my old Lincoln parts books so it may take me a while to find them for the 1952 to 54 model years. I found EAD-6110 is the base number The alpha suffix will be the standard or oversize depending on what it has in the parts book. Southside Obsolete may have something. He is barnfind08 here on the barn. Last edited by rotorwrench; 10-20-2021 at 07:54 PM. |

Re: Quest for lincoln yblock pistons
There maybe a option for pistons, using the gas, 172 Ford tractor pistons. They are 3.900, .088 over size. I think the 317 would bore that large w/o any problem. That would give you a 334 CI engine.
The wrist pin is the same size and the compression height (wrist pin center to piston top) is 2.085, I believe (I'll check that out tomorrow). That would give you .040 deck clearance and you can reduce that, easily by having the block decked, to what ever you want. The problem is that for new pistons, they usually only come with the cylinder liners but, you may be able to find them separate. If not, look for a couple of good used sets.

Re: Quest for lincoln yblock pistons
First, I've been interested in this engine since the 60's so, I've kept up on it but, I would only have the 368 version.
The stock, compression ht of the 3.5 stroke (317-3.800/341-3.94 bore) is 2.094, the 172 tractor engine is 2.087, only .007 difference. If you can find the piston, by itself, the TRW number is L2098, there are no oversizes for it, because you replace sleeves on this engine. I would recommend searching that piston number on Ebay, you might get a NOS hit. That .007 won't effect the CR, because you gain with the increased bore but, I would recommend decking the block .010-.020, anyway.

Re: Quest for lincoln yblock pistons
My old 850 has the gasoline types with the lowered compression and they are certainly a tractor type piston with heavy construction. The LP gas ones might just work at 8:1 compression but a person would have to play with the deck or heads for better compression. Hopefully this wouldn't have any other negative effects on valve clearances or other possibilities. The 801 diesel pistons have way too many rings and may have a different piston pin but I've not worked on them yet.

Re: Quest for lincoln yblock pistons
The L2098, is listed as a flat top piston. Ford didn't use any valve relief, in their pistons, until about '63.

Re: Quest for lincoln yblock pistons
I found these on EBAY. It said they were for a 317 truck Y Block. I read somewhere else that the truck and car used the same piston, so not sure. This new set on EBAY I think are
for a 3.80" bore ? Sal https://www.ebay.com/itm/40117686609...kAAOSwU-pXvx-4 |
