Help removing '34 radiator
I want to take the radiator out of my '34 Fordor and I need help.
First I have to drain the fluid from the radiator/block. Looks like a plug on each side of the engine toward the front. Right? Then I have to take the hood off....I can handle that. Next I have to remove the grill, right? Its fastened to the radiator in a number of places. 1. Top around the filler (4 screws 2 of them holding the hood) 2. two brackets on each side, one on each side at top and 1 on each side in the middle. 3. a bolt on each side just below the middle bracket attached to the body. 4. Now looking under the car I see 3 bolts on each side that look like they are also holding the grill in. Are they? Anything else? Once the grill comes out I need to know what is holding the radiator. I know the two rods that come from the firewall need to be unbolted. The four hoses (2 on top and 2 on the bottom) need to come off. What else? I'm sure there is something I can't see. HELP! Thanks for the help. I can do this......Tom |

Re: Help removing '34 radiator
Did you remember to undo those Bolts down the bottom on each side? They are not the easiest to get to in the confined space. The second photos shows the complete Kit for attaching the Radiator. |

Re: Help removing '34 radiator
only two bolts on the bottom,7/16 spanner, I only undo the small screws that hold the radiator side panel the the top of the side panel that sits atop the inner guard,
take the two bolts that hold the rad to the front cross member, radiator stays and take the rad and grill out as one piece. Make sure you put a piece of card board between the radiator core and the fan and distributor to stop damaging the core, also it is easier if you take the fan off the generator as it gives you more room Lawrie |

Re: Help removing '34 radiator
I've done it a ton - and on a 34 fourdoor. Everything everybody is saying is correct, one last thing to add is that I loosen the top two rods, but don't take them off until LAST (as they hold the thing up). I will take all the other mounting screws/bolts off (leaving the grille on) and once I can tell that it is loose, then I just pop the top rods off of the bracket (radiator side) and lift it off. Remember how you loosend the top-rods - if you loosened the nuts on the firewall side of the bracket, then when you put it back, tighten them in the reverse manner. This will help you maintain alignment at the top. And as somebody noted - just pull your fan to prevent damage to the core - you'll be glad you did!

The grill stays in ,remove the generator ,screws at the top ,two bolts on each side lower mount bolts as described ,fit something over the generator stud like a rubber wheel .a two man job or use a chain block .Ted

Re: Help removing '34 radiator
I never tried it in my 33 without taking the grille out. I think the grille might be different at the top, maybe that's why. What I was going to say is that the problem I have is getting the rad back in. the lower hoses are always a pain. I have a 59A in my car. Is a 33/34 motor easier when it comes to getting the rad and hoses back in.
Anyone got any tips re the lower hoses? (Apologies for the hijack but I thought it may help the original poster). Mart. |

Re: Help removing '34 radiator
Lower hoses ,fold them in half and fit them after its in or cut them as short and with some grease or soap slide them right onto the radiator tubes then lower the radiator in .Ted

Re: Help removing '34 radiator
I think Flathead Ted meant to say "the grille stays on" . . . "not in". There is no way to pull the radiator and leave the grille on the car - at least I can't imagine it.

Re: Help removing '34 radiator
Heating the hoses up in boiling or hot water works good.
It makes the hoses very pliable. Of course wear gloves when installing them. |
