Oil coming out of breather tube

Got a call today about oil being pumped out of the oil filler tube upon start up. don't really know the history of this motor but he said it started right up and idled well.

I know Ford had different designs for the baffles that are in the tube as it was a problem from day one.

I asked him about the oil and how much was in it and he wasn't sure. The rear seal was dry and not leaking. I asked him to check the pluga and see it they were fouled but haven't talked to him since.

Do you think some one put to much oil in it or is it something else???

Too much oil will cause oil out the filler, on my car the top of the "F" is too much --it pushes it out till it is a little below "F"
The smiths compressor will spit out big drops and froth at full, I was worried, then when the level got to 3/4 of full it stopped( it is hard to watch the car while driving, but the compressor is easy to watch)

My A would start and idle with the same thing. When I pulled the pistons, the rings fell away and the area between the rings was missing in many places. There was so much blow by that it was forcing the crank case to be pressurized and forcing the oil out the filler tube.

how much oil is being pumped out? My rebuilt had droplets that would flicker out but once I drove it and broke the engine in I don't get it as much... I also added a piece of scrubbing pad in the cap to catch the oil and return it to the bottom. Works like a charm...

I have heard that the filler tube should be installed with a specific orientation to help prevent oil from being expelled. I believe the lower baffle needs to be installed so it doesn't provide a "scooping action" for the oil slung by the crank and rods. If the oil filler pipe has been installed for a long time with no problems, the oil pipe orientation is probably not the problem.

sounds like a bit of blow by
mine has so much that it actually blew off the filler cap at 4000 rpm
still runs good...just smokes a bit out both ends

Some people put a sock over the fill pipe to keep the oil from oiling the side of the engine and hood.

It's called a breather tube for a reason. If you restrict it's breathing, the oil will come out the rear main. A Fumaze or one of the many other draft pipes is the answer. If the rings seat properly you will not only have maxium power, you wil minimize oil leaks.

The way I seat rings is, on first start-up, I rev the engine and let it come back down 6-8 times. I can then use a stock oil cap with no blow-by.

Hi Flat, The above suggestions are all good, esp. wrndln's above, but I have a bit of a radical solution for you. In my own A, I have installed a breather tube from the valve chamber cover into the aluminum bend of the airmaze extended filter I use with my carb (yes, the carb bowl has atmospheric equalization). In a marine engine this would be called a flame arrestor, but in my A it simply provides a secondary source of crankcase pressure equalization. Added benefits include a way for condensation to be removed from the engine interior, and for crankcase pollutants to be re-consumed by the combustion in the engine. If you decide to try this, be sure to mount the tube as high as you can get it on the valve chamber cover, and build in some kind of baffling arrangement so that oil splash cannot enter the breather tube.
