Default thermo stat flow

original thermostats fitted to 59s [center head outlet] had a butterfly style valve ,not a poppet style as is the common now . This would have given exceptional flow , does anyone know the diameter of the valve.

Is this the thermostat type you asking for?

I found those stuck inside the upper hoses on my 1936 Tudor De Luxe Touring Sedan. Last time car was driven was 1956. I believe it might be original ones!

The outer diameter is 45mm and length is 70 mm.
Inside diameter at top is 38mm.
There is a coiled bi-metal strip restricting the flow quite effectively as visible in the pic's. The coils diameter is approx 27mm and quite wide.

They have engraved text

THE DOLE VALVE CO CHICAGO U.S.A
Patents........

I have not found any information about this type on the net.

Those look like the thermostats that go in the upper hose on the earlier models not in the later model heads with the center outlet.

thanks the ones i've seen are similar but have a different skirt design that would allow coolant flow to go around the coil not over it so there would be a lot less restriction

You are right! It's not visible in the pic's but the section where coli sits are much wider inside as it is only the outer tube there, approx inner diameter 42-43mm. The coil is actually mounted on an inner tube part so only the upper half of the thermostat have the inner diameter 38mm
