Combination Machine Lubrication
I have a recently acquired combination machine. I see the oil cups but am wondering if the head stock should have lubrication(filled with oil). Also should the feed rod be lubricated or greased? I would guess so..
Anyone with experience in use of this machine? Thanks, Steve |

Re: Combination Machine Lubrication
I took mine apart and washed out the old dried up grease from the gears with solvent. Installed new rope packing on the input shaft, made a new gasket, then filled it with transmission gear lube up to the fill hole.

Re: Combination Machine Lubrication
Be careful when filling oil cups with a felt inside. When I bought a new lathe in the 70's I filled the oil cups for the headstock, then put the lathe to use. It soon started to slow down, as it overheated the bearings. The oil was still on top of the felt, and hadn't wicked it's way down to the tapered bearings. I pulled the wicks, then oiled it and reinstalled the wicks. It's been fine since then.
