He drove a lot of '30's cars in those period movies, all Fords iirc. The ones with Judy Garland, including the three "Andy Hardy". He had some cool jalopies. Whenever TCM runs them, I'm watching, if possible.

Don't know who but there is a v striking resemblance to Dick Tracy. There must be a two way radio wristwatch hidden in that moment in time! Bill.

Or his brother, Spencer Tracy, perhaps.

He also rolled over a '32 phaeton in one of his movies.

The '40 Continental was the ultimate factory custom car of all time, starting with the stodgy design of the Zephyr and ending with the coolest car on the road!

The "King" of destroying '32 Fords was W.C. Fields. In the 1932 film "If I had a Million", in one of eight vignettes, he received a million dollars from a deceased captain of industry, and decided to use it to remove "Road Hogs" from the streets of Los Angeles. The reason for this is that when he originally received this stipend, the new car he bought, (a 1932 Phaeton), was destroyed immediately after taking delivery of it by one of these drivers. Fields takes the rest of the money and purchases a fleet of cars (including several full classics) and a crew of drivers, and proceeds to roam the streets 0f Los Angeles, intent on wreaking revenge on said "Road Hogs".

In the end, after being successful in his quest, he has just enough left to purchase a brand new '32 "Fordor". When he drives it out of the dealership, you guessed it, it is flattened by a passing-by truck.

If you have any affection for 1932 Fords, you should not watch this movie,

Small change compared to the destruction of '32s in more recent times.

I remember seeing a movie where he was a naive mechanic who fell for some "broad" (to use the parlance of the day) and got conned into being getaway driver for some bank robbers. The car used for the "job" and driven by Rooney was a 49 ( or may have been a 50) Ford.

Yeah, but he did it with brand new cars, on film, and in less than 20 minutes.

I'm really enjoying this thread. While I'm no purist, this twelve word sentence from David put a smile on my face.
