Re: Seat Belts
Guess I'm weird, I don't mind the lap belt and can tolerate the early 80's pull to relieve tension type. But those newer vehicle constant tension restraints make me feel as though I'm getting an MRI every time I get behind the wheel. Tough call on older vehicle, collapsible steering and flexible shaft on 68 or newer steering but no one seems to worry. They showed us photos of impaled drivers back in they days of drivers ed. Seem to remember that none of the belts are attached to the frame only the body. Have heard many stories for the good or bad of them, in the end it's up to the owners.

Re: Seat Belts
I remember the driver ed film from about 1966 that said that an unbelted occupant was dead ( thru the windshield) in 3/10 of a second. Funny the details you remember ( or rather THINK you remember when there is no one around to challenge your memory.)

It was repaired and went on to live a happy life as a B sedan SCCA competitor for two years then back to the street as a really good driver. Picture of it just after returning to the street. Removing the 6 point roll bar was still to be done.

Re: Seat Belts
I have 3-point belts in my '59 Ford. The belt kits are made by one source, shop with your wallet. Juliano's is a good place. I got a GM style belt, they look good. For the B-pillar, I used their supplied plate, which has .200" holes, I suppose to use 3/16" hardware to mount them.
I had to use a hole saw to make a lower access hole to get the plates in. Use a wire to pull them into place. I tapped the 2 holes for 1/4-28 screws to secure the plates. The supplied shoulder bolts will be too short to be installed with the pillar garnish. I picked up some grade-8 longer bolts and machined some spacers to duplicate the shoulder portion of the too-short bolts. I had to machine a hole through the garnish. |

Re: Seat Belts
I must have lost something in the translation. How is taking risks "the elixir of life," and how does it prolong life?

Re: Seat Belts
I bought a set from Concours with the eye and a large flat washers because the had Peacock Blue to match my interior. Punch the hole do not drill…… I install thousands of them at Sears Auto Center in the early 60’s

Re: Seat Belts
A drill will snag your carpet. If no carpet do what you want.
A punch also breaks thru the metal and when you place the large washer rolls the splits back on the floorboard. Not a Sears but I went under mine and using a smaller flat punch flattened back the splits. |

Re: Seat Belts
Yes, a drill can definitely ruin your carpet. The drill bit will usually snag the carpet and cause long runs to pull out.
Another method for drilling holes in carpet is to use a soldering iron to "cauterize" the edges of the carpet hole so that the drill bit can't snag the carpet fibers. Last edited by Stephenorf; 04-08-2022 at 12:33 PM. |

Re: Seat Belts
This is the first time that I've read a recommendation for using a punch. However, I have read about using a soldering iron to melt the carpet to prevent snags. Obviously, you want to make absolutely certain about the hole's location. If you're a smoker, it probably won't matter.
