Fire in Redding, CA
There is a huge fire in Northern California that is engulfing the city of Redding (150 miles north of Sacramento). The news last night showed cars leaving the city bumper to bumper.
Hope any Ford Barners up there are OK. David Serrano. |

Re: Fire in Redding, CA
I can't imagine what this would be like.
People holler about the Midwest, the weather, and etc. BUT we never have anything like this. Even a tornado, you can 1.) take shelter and 2.) the odds of one actually hitting you are really pretty slim and 3.) if one does show up it's over and gone in a minute or so. Your neighbor's house may be leveled but you have absolutely no damage maybe a small twig or something in your yard. That's not uncommon. There are no bumper to bumper car jams trying to escape like you see in wild fires and hurricanes. But something like this.... and good luck protecting your property, antique cars, and so forth. |

Re: Fire in Redding, CA
Sorry to hear that. We were just up that way by Shasta Lake a few weeks ago and there were areas of previous fires. So sad...

Most people leave the area and seek shelter elsewhere. Some stay and defend their homes. The news likes to pick on those who choose to stay and save their homes, which works out well and they succeed 99% of the time. For those not familiar with Cal Fire policy, this might seem foolish. The reason some people choose to stay and defend is because firefighters don't defend homes. They do nothing! Their job is to set up lines and try to contain fires like this. They are instructed to not defend structures at all. Fires suck, but I still prefer them over tornadoes. |

Re: Fire in Redding, CA
Lost our home but saved our 30 coupe and 31 s\w. We now now have our lives work in two suit cases. But we are uninjuried, an well insured.
The wife commented that we owned more when we're first married. The fire is moving through 100 year old brush with 15+ mph ever changing winds. All because some jackass drove on flat tire! Thanks for the kind thoughts Jerry in what's left of Shasta P.S. Redding a town of 100,000 looks like a ghost town. Many shops and stores closed because employees d irectly affected by the fire.

Dear Jeery I can imagine the emotional toil that’s going on with you and the missus . What can any of us unaffected do to help you?
It’s un believable how quick ones life can change and go into the toilet so quickly. One advantage to starting over is you have made the big purge and will be mindful in the future about the amount of things that you replace the items lost. I know the wife and I have been there also not by fire though. God speed and continue to stay safe

No, there not much to be done. Thanks for the thought. We got the insurance stuff going. Now we just wait.
We can not get in to the fire zone yet. When I do, we are going to take the old girls on a victory drive. JB P.S. 80,000 acres, 5% contained. 350+ engines, arces doubles every 24 hours

Re: Fire in Redding, CA
Jerry not taking anything away from your terrible loss, but a similar situation is going on in central Oregon. Mult. fires burning wheat field of farmers. One was a 70,000 acres fire with another starting a couple of days ago. Heavy losses to these people.
Hope you get your life back together again Jerry. Sounds good to take that victory drive in your A's.

Re: Fire in Redding, CA
There are dozens of wildfires in the west, affecting thousands of residents. While our thoughts and prayers are with them, lets not forget the firefighters who risk their lives in these hellish conditions. Calfire policy aside, here in Colorado they try to save property as well.

Re: Fire in Redding, CA
I can’t get my head around a loss due to fire.
We lost everything - all possessions including two Alfa Romeos - except the clothes on our back and a third Alfa Romeo - to a flood in Corning NY in 72. Now we will not purchase a home unless it is over 15 feet higher than nearby water and it has to be far away from a water runoff area. |

Too often dangerous fires are started by idiots with a lighter. I predict that these fires will soon be under control - 200 of Australia's and New Zealand's best firefighters are on their way to help our American friends and I would be surprised if other countries were not lending a hand too. I think anyone caught lighting a fire on a hot, dry day with the intention of causing mayhem like this should be treated no differently from a terrorist. I hope all affected can move on with the minimum of loss.

Re: Fire in Redding, CA
Boy I feel for you all affected by fire (or Flood). It also makes me feel a little sick.
The loss of life, homes and possessions costing years of work. Also the loss of live stock. There is only one good thing that results and that is humanity and kindness people extend to those who have been affected. And yes, I am thinking of you. gary
