Re: 33-34 grill plating ?
An Oregon restorer had to build his own ANODE fixture to get proper chrome coverage on those grills. He is long gone and that fixture lost. Without it the chrome can be splotchy. Newc

Re: 33-34 grill plating ?
There are quality places that can do the work - the prices were high before COVID, have no idea as to now.
Also, you need to ponder how close to original you actually want it. The grill bars originally had a sort of satin chrome on them (don't know the correct term) - they were not done in bright chrome like the rest of the shell. I'd probably get in touch with Custom Chrome Plating and Advanced Plating https://www.customchromeplating.com/ https://www.advancedplating.com/site/Finishes.html Discuss the grill bars with them to see what they know and can offer. Also, do your homework on the type of finish that was originally used - some on here know more about it than I do! (imagine that! LOL) Recommendation: Best to buy a defibrillator before you get quotes. |

Re: 33-34 grill plating ?
My father was just quoted $2500 to have his very nice 34 shell chromed by a shop in Minnesota. I think they were in the Minneapolis area.

Re: 33-34 grill plating ?
I think the bill to redo my 34 Grille was close to $3000 - and that was 15 years ago. (Jon Wright). It probably has 5 lbs of copper in it . . . which is the "bondo" of chrome platers! LOL

Re: 33-34 grill plating ?
I had a 35 grill that was pitted done by Advanced Plating in Nashville back before the flood and fire and it was around $3200, but it came out perfect.

Re: 33-34 grill plating ?
Advanced plating is probably the best around. Just make sure you're sitting down when you get the price quote. The same with any plater.

Re: 33-34 grill plating ?
This post makes me really appreciate having my standard model 35's, with their painted grilles, even more so now that I'm seeing these prices for chrome plating 😀

Re: 33-34 grill plating ?
Quote:
Back in about 2008 or 2009 Graves Plating in Alabama plated our 35 grill for $975.00. plus we had shipping to and back BUT I didn't feel that was too unreasonable for plating. Granted, the grill was a nice straight grill, no rust grill BUT still a fair price I thought. I guess my point being, it "MAY" pay to shop around, I have a lot of stuff on our 32 that was done by Advanced, had to send a couple pieces back as we were not satisfied with the outcome AND they did "replate" them NO problem (and maybe because we spent $8000 for the total chrome bill) BUT they did not handle the job as asked and it cost us "several" months of extra time. I also deal with them in my business for "industrial" plating of some materials for a customer AND I am not a fan of Advanced.......NOT a very friendly NOR customer service oriented mind set in my experience. |

Re: 33-34 grill plating ?
Would be interesting to see what actual hands on time was expended on the 34 grills and cost of materials.

Re: 33-34 grill plating ?
Thanks for the information and real-world experiences with Graves and Advanced. Information from actual customers is SUPER valuable when considering these types of vendors - much appreciate it!

Graves was a pleasure to deal with. We called him on the phone, sent pictures of the grill and he gave us an estimate over the phone of about $935 "BUT" he would give us a more "exact" estimate once he got the grill in hand!". We sent him the grill and he called the day he got it. He said "there were two spots that will need a little more attention that he would have to revise his quote from $935 to $975!!". He said it would take him about 2-3 weeks and It did!!!! Very Happy with Graves. |

Re: 33-34 grill plating ?
I've seen posts on Instagram of people having stuff plated by Ogden Chrome. The Kindig shop appears to use Ogden on their high-end builds. YMMV.
