Cool My galloping 'a'

HEY GUYS i recently rebuilt my zenith carburetor,.i have a late 31 with the side bowel attached. it was weeping gas and one sugestion was to check the main jet which i found to be slightly short so i changed it out. however now i'm getting a gallop not only at idle but all the time. i reset the timing, cleaned the plugs and regaped them and reset the points. any suggestions out there as to why i can't get the gallop to stop?

Hi mate! glad to hear of others in the Indented Firewall Gang! now, down to business, when it idles, does it sound like a cylinder missing or is it just random? I had a similar problem with my truck, I had a stuck exhaust valve and it never quite ran right. I did all the same stuff you did and finally decided to pop the head off and lap the valves. But before we discuss that, any other symptoms like having to keep the gav open farther than normal?

So put the short jet back in and see what happens!! Was it ok prior to changing the jet?

Is it heading towards the barn. Hard to reign it in when heading in that direction.

most likly a fuel/carb issue.
does the GAV change the gallop when adjusting it?

Did the replacement jet have the same size orifice as the original? If it's larger that could be your problem.

you check the measurement of the orifice by using a certain sized drill bit like a feeler gauge. since the gallop is not affected by the gav adjustment, do what the others say on the carb, then check the engine for equal compression on all four cylinders if you can. if one is seriously down, stuck valve

I use a small (numbered) drill bit index, sizes #61 (.0390") through #80 (.0135")
