Default Spark Plug Wires

After ordering wires 2 times from local parts stores and having them totally wrong length I need some recommendations for the correct ones. I have a '59 Galaxie with 292 engine. Everything is stock.

I got mine from either from Concourse in NV or the Thunderbird Connection in Concord, Ca. I just can't remember which.

Some years back I had a super good parts guy at my local NAPA store. Notice I didn't say counterman... I told him I wanted the specific ones, and explained routing and all that. He ordered them, and they went on correctly.

I have never had good luck with pre-made plug wires, some are perfect in length and the next one is a 1" short. I buy the cable in bulk and the correct ends and make my own, one at a time and then they fit like I want

I usually buy the universal sets and cut to the length needed.

I usually bought the reproduction sets from the Thunderbird suppliers (Larry’s or Casco since I’m on the west coast) and never had a problem for fitting or use. Running MSD units, so plenty of spark. I’ve got a set of Moroso crimpers for plug wires and have made many sets, but never for my yblocks.

If I get a universal set or use bulk wire how do I put the ends on? Do I need a special crimper? How well do they stay on?

They make special crimpers for spark plug wires. I’ve got a pair I bought years ago. 3 sets of jaws, small wiring, medium wiring, and spark plugs. So old they’re the small plug wires, not the new 8 and 9mm kind. Google spark plug wire crimpers, wide choice and price.

I’ve made a lot of sets of wires, but I don’t think I ever had to make a set for a y block. The ones I’ve bought fit ok. I just saw a post on another site about this. Link here

I've seen some wires on line that show one end open but they never give the lengths of the wires. The one for #5 cylinder is almost 4' long. The already made up ones I ordered locally never had one that long. I don't know if the universal sets include wires that long either.

I bought a set for our 292 and none of the wires would reach #5 plug. not even close so I replaced the 2 bad wires(luckily were short wires) from the set I bought and left the remaining Packard Bell wires

I guess I'll have to ask what the length of the wires are in a universal set before ordering. That seems to be the best way to go without making up my own set from scratch. Thanks for all the replies.

Anyone know where a person can but ends and boots septrately (one or two at a time)?

Every time I try and reuse one it never seems to look good to me.
