Default Kerosene

I will be changing the fluid in the differential and transmission soon . After I drain those fluids ,is it safe to flush the differential and transmission with 1-K Heater fuel kerosene before re-filling with 600w . Klean strip is the brand available in my area. Will this kerosene be safe and not harm the bearings and gears ? I'm only asking because earlier I read a post stating to flush those components with kerosene to remove any sludge . Thank you .

Why not just change the oil and let the new oil clean the innards? If you are worried about sludge, change the oil a second time after a thousand miles to see how it looks. Fresh oil provides better lube quality than old worn oil that has been sheared and broken down. Let sleeping sludge be.

If you go the kerosene route make sure you do not drain and let it sit too long. Kerosene will remove ALL traces of oil from everything and the oxidation (RUST) process will immediately start

I’ve done a kerosene flush for the transmission and it worked fine. It won’t hurt the gears just being in there for a few minutes. You’re supposed to rock the car or rotate the wheels to churn it. But as stated above, you should refill with oil promptly.

How dirty is the old oil? If it is fairly clean then just change it. If it is really dirty then you can clean it out with kerosene or other solvent. Then it becomes a problem of how to get rid of the dirty kerosene.

Why!

If your transmission is that dirty? Maybe it needs to be removed, taken apart, and check if a rebuild is needed.

If your car is shifting properly, and you do not have excessive noise coming from the transmission. I would drain it, leaving it over night to drip out. Than refill with new oil.

Are you just feeling the need to do something to your car?

If it isn’t broken? Don’t try to fix it!

Good advise but some folks like to fix it until it is broken...

Ford recommended flushing with kerosene, was that because of the old black 600w ? ATF is a high detergent oil , maybe drain fill with ATF and the rear tires off the ground run through the gears for a few minutes? Ford also recommended adding kerosene to the 600w for winter operation, so it shouldn’t hurt to flush with it.

I like Big Hammer's ATF advice. ATF will clean things while maintaining a level of lube and corrosion protection.

If you have been using modern gear oils, there is no need to flush the transmission and differential because modern gear oil has disputants that keep debris in suspension. Also, modern gear oils do not form sludge.

Thank you for the advice. Nothing is broke so probably best don't "fix". I will drain very well, refill with 600w, then done . GeneBob, Oldbluoval, Ordsgt, alexiskai, nkaminar, WHN, TerryO, Bighammer - I appreciate your replies !

I will go with what Bob Bidonde said in Post #11. Do not use 600 weight oil but use the modern 85W-140 G5 gear oil. Your transmission will thank you. The modern oil has additives that will reduce wear and will help keep your transmission and rear end clean.

Does the 85w-140 affect the “synchro” for shifting? Never used it but I’ve heard the thicker viscosity enables easy in shifting

I always do a kerosene flush to clean out any shavings and any sludge in the Tranny. I drive my pickup around a few times to get the stuff flowing, drain it out, and pour kerosene in it, I jack up one rear wheel, and chock the opposite wheel. I'll start it up, put it in each gear and let the clutch out and give it some revs, cleans out the tranny and strips all the crud off the gears, making 'em smooth and silky. I'll then refill with 600W and put a few tablespoons of amber general-purpose grease in the tranny, the grease mixes with the 600W and makes it shift smooth as butter. I also kerosene flush my rear axle when the time comes around to do it. I will usually jack up both rear wheels so both the tranny and axle can be done at the same time.
