Default '40 Deluxe Sedan Front Spring Shackles

Hello all,

I recently purchased my '40 and the front end is mostly disassembled. I purchased new spring shackles for it with nylon bushings, but the bushings don't seem to fit in the perch.

I have been unable to find any videos or walkthroughs on installing the front spring, so if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be awesome. I have bought the EFV8 40 Ford book but it hasn't shipped yet and I need to get the front end under the car so I can return the roller I borrowed.

Thanks!

SoloGeneral needs instructions on installing the front spring to his newly purchased 1940 Ford Deluxe Tudor Sedan.

Sologeneral, there are two methods that can be used to spread the spring to install the shackles. The first method is to use a spreader bar or porta-power to spread the spring so the shackle bars can be installed.

The second method is to completely disassemble the spring so that the main leaf can be deflected by hand to install the shackle bars. This method requires two large C clamps to hold the spring together while the center bolt is replaced with a long piece of suitably sized all thread. Then, the spring is reassembled after the main leaf is installed.

Please post a picture of the shackles you are trying to use and the perch pin if possible. Perhaps someone will be able to provide more guidance on installation.

I understand how to do it, its more a matter of if I have the correct shackles, and if anyone can provide a tutorial on how the front end is installed under the car.

I made sure the shackles I bought were the correct size before purchasing. The bushings fit correctly in the spring, but not in the perch. Is there something I am missing here? If I put the shackle on without the bushings there is far too much play in them, so I know that probably isn't correct.

Are you sure you got the steel sleeve that surrounds the original shackle pin out of the wishbone? You can also use a brake hone in the wishbone to make sure you get all the rust out of the wishbone.

I did not remove the originals, they were already out. I wondered when looking at it if the sleeve was still in it, but didn't want to start heating or hammering until someone confirmed it for me.

From one picture, the close up of the perch, it looks to be two different colors there, which makes me think you may still have part of the bushing in the perch. Make certain you have all of the old bushing out.

It also looks to me that the old sleeves are still in.

That's what I thought too, but again, didn't want to go heating, hammering, or prying on anything until I was sure! I'll see if I can drive them out tonight.

I'm just curious, why not get a set of NOS shackles instead of the new nylon type?

There is a repair sleeve pressed into the perch reducing it's diameter. Remove the sleeve.
