Default 1940 original factory trim installation question

Recently I was working on an original 40 Deluxe hood, removing the trim and emblems. When I got to the Ford Deluxe script on the hood sides I noticed these little "drips" or "runs" of a semi-soft material under or around the push clip on the back of the emblem.

I've never noticed these before. What is the material used and what was the purpose/intent of its use?

Obviously the hood was probably worked on sometime in the past by who knows who, using who knows what, to help seal or tighten the emblem.
Not factory, so best to not over think it.

Gearheadbill: Those clips look homemade using a pop rivet. It would be interesting to see the other side of the hood script. The original Deluxe hood script used different style "spring clips" to hold the script in place with no sealer or "drippy stuff". The OEM trim clips look like the first 2 shown here. They push on. 40 dash chrome trim uses same style clip.

When I first looked at the clip I thought that the clip looked odd but when I took a closer look found it to be correct and the same as the HF clips.

GHB: Upon closer examination that does look to be the correct style clip.

I'll see if I can't take a couple of better pictures. Not trying to justify "original" status as some might think; all I am is interested. Not even my hood.

so....would the dripped material have ever been done at the factory? Or dealer? Just seems like an interesting way to fix a loose emblem.

It looks like the clip was installed with epoxy and to much was used.

I was given the advice to use some sort of grease or silicone on the backside of all my trim and emblems to prevent water from entering interior side of car or bare metal.
My guess is someone did the same to yours and prevented future problems.

Why does the post part look hollow? Maybe as suggested a broken off post was improvised with a hollow one to increase glue/epoxy hold. Seems to be working.

Here's what my 40 emblem hood clips look like. Emblem is a Drake repro from the 70's. No goo with solid pins on the emblem. I recall the OEM were the same.

Are you sure you didn't scrape the "goo" off before the picture was taken?

51Merc: I am still laughing. You got me.
I think the "goo" was later removed by a fellow named "Goofy".

Not hollow. Dirt/corrosion/discoloration on the end of the pin makes it look hollow in the picture.

But it is apparent to me now that the emblems must have been removed/replaced at some time in the long-ago past and whoever did that work used some type of goo on the emblems before re-installing the trim.

Thanks for all the help. Curiosity satisfied.
