Default Moving Amp Meter

I have an amp meter that increases in charge,up to 10-12 amps, the more I accelerate. The meter has always gone to charge 4-6 amps on start up and then to 0 amps where it will stay until I turn on lights. Can this be related in any way to a distributor I have just changed, due to one of the ears breaking, or is the problem in the charging system? I have a diode in the cut out and am running a generator. I do realize that I can put both wires together and still be able to drive it BUT.......there must be something wrong here. I have checked the two connector nuts on the back of gage and both are tight.

Trying to get it running properly as I'm leaving for the New England Meet in the a.m.

I would check the battery condition, then use a known accurate ammeter to set the output to no more than 2 or 3 amps for average driving.
