6 volt heater motor
I am looking for a source to either rebuild my 6 volt, two-speed heater motor for my '41 or to buy a new one. It reverses direction for heat or defrost. Any ideas?

Re: 6 volt heater motor
Post measurements of motor. I have one that I think is 40 ford, but not sure. Yours for shipping.

Re: 6 volt heater motor
Thanks, Lawson. The motor measures 2 3/4" wide, 3 1/2" front to back, shaft is 3/4", posts to mount to heater are 2 1/4" center to center.

Re: 6 volt heater motor
Check out the 6 V Balkamp #655 1021 from NAPA. Very close to the '41 in size. I'm using the 12 V version #655 1022 in my '41-'48 heater. Just need a reversing switch to go from heat and defrost.

Re: 6 volt heater motor
How many wires go into your motor today ?
If you have 2 wires the low speed is a resistor in the switch. |

Re: 6 volt heater motor
Thanks, all. I will continue to look for a two-speed reversible motor like I have (3 wires to switch plus ground wire).

Re: 6 volt heater motor
I assume your motor is defective. There are people that rebuild electric motors. Most of these fellows survive by servicing industrial motors but usually have the skills to fix any kind of motor. I had one rebuild a 1948 shop motor and they were very reasonable. These kinds of shops may be hard to find so one has to be persistent in looking.

Re: 6 volt heater motor
Ted: I finally got around to looking at the motor I have, It is a two wire, 3" in length, 2 3/4 circumference and 3/4 shaft, However, there are no mounting studs or bolts, but it requires a band around it with a rubber strip that goes between the mounting strap and the motor itself. I would post a photo, but have lost my ability to do that. Doesn't seem like what I thought it was however. still yours for shipping if you want it. Lawson

Re: 6 volt heater motor
If youre looking for a shop to have it rewound, look for people redoing small motors like hand tools.
Companies doing regular 3-phase motors usually dont like brushed motors to much. Should be possible to adapt a 2-wire motor with a couple of resistors and diodes to do the job. Adapting a non reversing motor takes only a resistor but for it to be able to reverse you need a double setup and diodes to keep it from shorting out. |

Re: 6 volt heater motor
Lawson, thanks for sending me the motor details and thanks to others with comments. I found a local automotive electric shop who is going to rebuild it for me.

Re: 6 volt heater motor
That's the motor that I used in my '39 heater. It's about 1\2 inch longer than stock one so I had to modify blower body to fit it in. I use the stock switch, everything works fine.

Re: 6 volt heater motor
Hi Ted, I'm in the Charlotte area as well, so would you please post about your experience with the automotive electric shop and let us know who it is? Thanks!
